The Brewing Dept. to Stage OTHELLO

By:

The up-and-coming artists of The Brewing Dept. (TBD) are thrilled to return to Alchemical Theatre Laboratory with their new production of Shakespeare's Othello. The production will take place from November 12th to 22nd at Alchemical's innovative White Box Theatre on West 14th Street.

In this production, TBD imagines Shakespeare's classic play as a gripping, tragic thriller. Passed over for promotion by Othello, Iago plots a jealousy-fueled revenge, manipulating Othello into believing that his wife Desdemona is unfaithful. Director Thomas Kapusta draws characters and audience alike into a world of paranoia, lies, and deceit, as we realize too late the tragic consequences of treating the people we love as things we own.

Othello will play Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 7:30pm and Sundays at 3:00pm. All tickets will be $18, general admission and are available at TheBrewingDept.org.

This production is the result of TBD's signature development process, which is designed to foster both new works and new interpretations of classic plays. In the case of Othello, the show was originally presented in workshop form in the fall of 2014, following a series of interactive online postings from director Thomas Kapusta entitled Director's Notes on Othello.

The Brewing Dept. is a not-for-profit theater collective founded in April of 2013. After four years of artistic collaboration at Columbia University, our founding members formed TBD in order to foster a supportive community dedicated to giving projects a substantive developmental process, which in turn allows artists to create their best work. TBD's members work collectively to identify the best creative timeline for each project to fully gestate and mature, and we take turns focusing our collective energy on enabling and supporting those projects over the course of that process. This means that every TBD event, from workshops to fully produced work, has been crafted as a step along an ongoing developmental process.
