Shelby Company Presents SOUSEPAW: A BASEBALL STORY Tonight

Shelby Company presents the New York premiere of award-winning playwright Jonathan A. Goldberg's critically acclaimed play SOUSEPAW: A BASEBALL STORY directed by Courtney Ulrich, with preview performances beginning tonight, October 9th prior to an official press opening on October 11th at 17 Frost Space (17 Frost Street, Williamsburg) Brooklyn.

Winner of "Best of Fringe" at the 2011 San Francisco Fringe Festival, SOUSEPAW: A BASEBALL STORY is according to the San Francisco Chronicle, "a sharply staged tense two-hander [that] looks at record-setting strikeout king Rube Waddell in a last comeback attempt near the end of his short life in 1913." In a rundown hotel in Texas, self proclaimed "greatest lefty pitcher" Rube Waddell is planning his big comeback. He's known for his wild pranks and a childlike love of fire trucks and zoo animals; however, he's also famous as a fall down drunk. Ready to put it all behind him for this one last chance, he hires the Reptile Girl from the circus to keep him company -- and sober. But she has her own twisted past, telling fortunes and running away with an encyclopedia salesman who could name all the stars. During their long night together these two lost souls spill their secrets and try to hide from a truth that can't help but be revealed. Loosely based on a true story.

James B. Kennedy will once again assume the role of Rube Waddell - Mr. Kennedy originated the role during the Minnesota Fringe Festival and again at the San Francisco Fringe Festival productions of SOUSEPAW. The role of Reptile Girl will be portrayed by Christina Pumariega (last seen on Broadway in Theresa Rebeck's "Seminar").

The design and production team for SOUSEPAW includes: April Bartlett (scenic design), Deanna Frieman (costume design) and Nathaniel Kent (executive producer).

Jonathan A. Goldberg (playwright) won the Rita and Burton Prize for Theater for his play "The Jew and the Demon," and his play "How to Shoot a Bull Moose" received the Israel Baron Award. His short work was featured at Ephemerama a monthly sketch comedy show at the Magnet Theater. He won the 2013 In Process Short Play Festival at Hudson Valley Shakespeare as well as 2012 L Magazine short fiction contest. He has an MFA in dramatic writing from NYU Tisch.

Courtney Ulrich (director) has a BA in Theater and Performance Studies from Georgetown University, where she won the Donn B. Murphy Award for Excellence in Theater. There she directed the DC premiere of "The Pain and The Itch," by Bruce Norris, a devised work entitled "Still Me" about the experiences of LGBTQ students on campus. For a festival celebrating the Centennial of Tennessee Williams in partnership with Arena Stage, she Assistant Directed "The Glass Menagerie" with Derek Goldman, and created additional works based on the life of Williams including an installation, which then went on to the Williams Festival in Provincetown, MA. In New York, she has worked with New Dramatists, Target Margin Theater, The Foundry Theatre, Rising Circle Rep, Dixon Place, The Culture Project and Powerhouse/NYSAF at Vassar College.

Shelby Company was founded in December 2008 in NYC. They are a playwright-centric theatre devoted to creating new works for the stage. Previous productions include "Fallsway" (MN Fringe 2013); Jonathan Goldberg's "Font of Knowledge" (MN Fringe 2012); "Sousepaw: A Baseball Story" (MN Fringe, IndyFringe and SF Fringe 2011); "The Land Whale Murders" (Theatre 3, 2010); "Uncle Shelby's Traveling Treasure Trunk" (Los Angeles' Complex Theatre; MN Fringe 2010); "Uncle Shelby's WunderPantry of Possibilities, or Whatever Happened to Sunderban Village" (Planet Connections 2010); "The Luck of the Ibis," "The Mike and Morgan Show" and "You May Be Splendid Now" (Access Theatre 2010); "Say Say Oh Playmate" (NOLAFringe 2009); "Winnemucca" (three days in the belly) (San Jose Stage, MN Fringe and FringeNYC 2009); and "New Beulah" (The Creek and the Cave, Planet Connections 2009; The Pear Ave. Theatre 2010). As well as full-length productions, Shelby Company has produced a monthly comedy show, Ephemerama, which has amassed around 100 short comedic plays and played to sold-out houses all over the USA; and held developmental readings of numerous original plays.

Scheduled tonight, October 9 through November 2, SOUSEPAW: A BASEBALL STORY will have a performance schedule of Wednesdays through Saturdays at 8:00pm. Tickets are $18 general admission, $15 students and seniors and can be purchased online at www.sousepaw.org/buy-tickets.
