Satan’s Whore, Victoria Woodhull Opens at Theater for the New City 3/22-4/8

By:

Theater for the New City (Crystal Field, Executive Director) is set to present Satan's Whore, Victoria Woodhull, written by Richard Geha, March 22 – April 8, 2012. Lissa Moira directs this post-Civil War, period drama about the sexual liberationist Victoria Woodhull. Don Garverick choreographs, with set design by David "Zen" Mansley & lighting design by William Giraldo.

Satan's Whore follows the life of Victoria Woodhull as she journeys from sexually abused child, to the most infamous, celebrated, intellectual beauty of 19th Century New York City. Feminist suffragette & renowned spiritualist, Woodhull was the first female presidential candidate, with Frederick Douglass as her running mate. She was also the first female newspaper publisher & Wall Street broker, but was best known as a fearless free-love advocate & practitioner. Woodhull was a woman so far ahead of her time, that time has yet to catch up.

Richard Geha (Playwright) is a clinical psychologist & a psychoanalyst in private practice. He holds an MA in literature & an MA & a PhD in psychology. As a university professor, he has taught undergraduate, graduate & post-graduate courses, as well as instructing at psychoanalytic institutes & several of his papers on psychoanalysis & literature have appeared in professional journals. He has published two collections of short stories: Primal Scenes: Stories of Radical Witness & As Marilyn Lay Dying: Stories of the Primal Scene. One of the main themes of his professional papers, short stories & plays addresses the extent to which we live in fictional worlds, worlds invented by the mind. Along with his wife, Lisa, he also breeds & raises Egyptian Arabian horses.

Lissa Moira (Director/Dramaturg) is also a well-known playwright (Before God Was Invented, Time It Is) & the co-writer of Dead Canaries, a feature film starring Charles Durning, Dan Luria, Dee Wallace-Stone & Joel Higgins. Her latest directorial success, Siren's Heart: Marilyn in Purgatory, by Walt Stepp, will open Off-Broadway in April. Look for Lissa & Richard West's DaDa noir musical comedy, Who Murdered Love? this summer.
