Noor Theatre Presents Betty Shamieh’s THE STRANGEST 11/14
Noor Theatre's second-annual HIGHLIGHT reading series continues with The Strangest by Betty Shamieh and directed by May Adrales on Monday, November 14th at 7:30pm at The Fourth Street Theatre in New York City.
The Strangest takes a cue from Camus. Midway through his classic, The Stranger, an unnamed Arab is killed. Leaping from this moment and working backwards through possible histories of tangled romance, ethnic conflict and random violence, Ms. Shamieh has crafted a new play inspired by this unknown character. Set in French Algiers, The Strangest is an absurdist murder mystery about three Algerian brothers who vie for the love of the same woman. Their bitter rivalry ends with one brother being inexplicably gunned down by a French stranger.
Ms. Shamieh's plays have been translated and produced in seven languages. She was recently selected as a 2011 UNESCO Young Artist for Intercultural Dialogue. Her New York premieres include The Black Eyed (New York Theatre Workshop), The Machine (Naked Angels) and Roar (The New Group), which is currently being taught at over thirty American universities. Ms. Shamieh was named as a Playwriting Fellow at Harvard University's Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Studies in 2006 and is currently an artist-in-residence at HERE Arts Center. She is a NYTW Usual Suspect and a member of New Dramatists. www.bettyshamieh.com.
