The New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) today announced the recipients of grants made through The Andrew W. Mellon New York Theater Program. The program, which NYFA administers on behalf of The Foundation, awarded $2.9 million to New York City-based not-for-profit theaters. Grants will be awarded to 31 companies on the basis of artistic excellence. Among the recipients, which represent a variety of missions and budget sizes, are Elevator Repair Service, The Mint, National Asian American Theatre Company, Pregones, PS 122, The Women's Project and The Working Theater (a complete list of recipients follows). The term of the grants is two-years and funds will support the general operations of each organization.

"It is always an honor and inspiration to collaborate with The Mellon Foundation," said NYFA Executive Director Michael L. Royce. "They are truly committed to ensuring the effectiveness and relevance of their grant making. In these uncertain times, providing organizations with generous, multi-year general operating support allows them to continue to produce their work without compromise."

"Mellon support for ERS is perfectly timed," says John Collins, Artistic Director of Elevator Repair Service Theater. "Demand for our work has grown rapidly over the last five years and though we have made huge strides in developing an efficient and professional administrative infrastructure to support it, this kind of grant is critical right now. Our two-year Mellon grant helps us stay ambitious with our production calendar and it is a tremendous vote of confidence in our future."

The recipients were recommended by a panel of 18 theatre professionals who collectively reviewed work at 124 theaters with budgets between $75,000 and $4 million. Those considered the most artistically excellent were invited to submit funding proposals. Grants awarded range between $10,000 and $200,000 based on the size of the recipients' operating budgets. NYFA began administration of the New York Theater program in 2008.
