NY Int'l Fringe Fest Presents BARISTAS, Opens 8/15

Murder! Intrigue! Espresso! Baristas, a dark comedy written by Evan Twohy, will open up shop for a World Premiere at the New York International Fringe Festival. The production runs for 5 performances at The Kraine Theater, 85 East 4th Street on August 15 at 2pm, August 18 at 9 pm, August 19 at 11pm, August 25 at 2pm, and August 28 at 7pm.

On slacker Camille's first day as the newest barista at Kåffe, a corporate chain coffee shop, she butts heads with straight-laced colleague Ramon. That is until they discover their mutual obsession with infamous serial killers and the vicious details of their ghastly crimes. As they relive the stories of history's wickedest paramours, Camille and Ramon discover that amongst the blenders, Splenda, and coffee beans they might find love . . . or at least a new partner in crime. With three pumps of comedy and an extra shot of horror, Baristas is one blend that will certainly be popular with this year's Fringe-goers.

Baristas is brought to the New York Fringe Festival by an entire cast and crew of over 30 Northwestern University students and recent alumni. The play received a reading at the Agnes Nixon Playwriting Festival at Northwestern University in Spring 2010. The production stars Reggie Gowland, Kenner Bolt, Joel Sinensky, and Isabel Richardson. Baristas is produced by Zachary Baer and directed by Scott Weinstein, whose work was recently seen in Murder for Two at the Adirondack Theatre Festival.

CREATIVE TEAM BIOGRAPHIES -----

EVAN TWOHY (Writer) is a recent graduate of Northwestern University, where he studied playwriting with Laura Schellhardt. He workshopped Baristas as a winner of the University's 2010 Agnes Nixon Playwriting Award. He enjoys working as a graphic designer and performing stand-up comedy. Evan lives in New York City.

SCOTT WEINSTEIN (Director) most recently directed the first full production of Murder For Two at the Adirondack Theatre Festival. A recent graduate of Northwestern University, his directing credits there include Jason Robert Brown's Parade, Noises Off, Laughing Wild, and the original song cycle Learning to Play. As an assistant Scott has worked at Chicago's Goodman Theatre, Victory Gardens, Northlight Theatre and the Cleveland Playhouse apprenticing under such directors as Jeff Award winners David Bell, Dennis Zacek and Dominic Missimi. Scott is an associate member of the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society.

ZACHARY BAER (Producer) returns to the New York International Fringe Festival after working on the 2009 production, Cephalopod: A Play Below Sea Level. Zachary is a recent graduate of Northwestern University's School of Communication, where he produced a variety of productions, including Cabaret, The Wizard of Oz, and Parade, two of which were Northwestern's annual Dolphin Show: America's largest student-produced musical. Zachary recently launched NU Musicals, a student-written musical theatre reading series at Northwestern, and he hopes to continue developing these new works in New York.

REGGIE GOWLAND (Ramon) is a founding member of Filament Ensemble in Chicago. Recent NY credits include Seussical the Musical (Cat in the Hat) at the Summer Theatre of New Canaan, A Different Kind of Animal, a new play by writer Tomas Higgins, performed at the 2010 Samuel French Off Off Broadway Short Play Festival, and Carefree, AZ a play by Steven Tylor O'Connor, performed at the 2010 Fresh Fruit Reading Series.

KENNER BOLT (Camille) is a proud Northwestern graduate and NYC actress. She is excited to make her Fringe Festival debut. Theatre credits include: The Wizard of Oz (Lion), Cloud Nine (Edward/Victoria), Old Times (Anna), The Goat (Stevie). Film credits: Happy, Slit & Commit, WAILA

JOEL SINENSKY (Man) is an actor, writer, and comedian. He's thrilled to be making his New York Fringe Festival debut. Since graduating from Northwestern, Joel has had his original work produced in both Chicago and here in NYC, including, oddly enough, his very own play about serial killers. He was last seen in The Green Knight as part of the Planet Green Theater Festival, and you can catch him performing stand-up comedy all over the city.

Isabel RichardsON (Woman) is a senior Theatre major at Northwestern University. Isabel has been in various Northwestern Productions, including In Trousers, Seussical the Musical, Evil Dead the Musical, Bye, Bye, Birdie!, and the American Musical Theatre Project's A Doctor in Spite of Himself. Isabel is also an actor in NSTV sketch comedy and a member of Mee-Ow, Northwestern's short-form improv troupe.
