HERE Arts Center Presents Victoria Linchong's DISPOSSESSED, Now thru 7/21

By:

Direct Arts presents a workshop production of DISPOSSESSED, a bittersweet story about finding and losing home in the Lower East Side, created and performed by actress and award-winning producer Victoria Linchong. Performances will take place today, July 19-21 at HERE Arts Center in the Dorothy B. Williams Theater as part of the SubletSeries@HERE.

In 2011, Victoria Linchong was evicted from her East Village apartment after living there for nearly twenty years. Besides the quandary of trying to find a place to live in a gentrified New York City inhospitable to struggling artists, there was the equally vexing problem of what to do with all her books. Her solution? DISPOSSESSED - a one-woman play about her eviction, after which she will give each person in the audience a book from her ridiculously extensive library.

Featuring the writing of Sir Peter Hall, Luc Sante and Jane Jacobs, DISPOSSESSED investigates the history of apartments from Ancient Rome to the present and the human instinct for object attachment, while revealing the personal journey of a struggling artist from the mean streets of the old Lower East Side to the meaner streets of the new New York.

DISPOSSESSED is created and performed by Victoria Linchong (PAPER ANGELS, Best of the San Francisco Fringe 2010) and directed by Rick Kuperman (ROLL! at Arts Nova, MY MACHINE IS POWERED BY CLOCKS at Ice Factory). Video design is by Stefanie Koseff (POE...AND THE MUSEUM OF LOST ARTS at 3LD), with additional video by Clayton Patterson and Paul Garrin.
This production is a part of SubletSeries@HERE, a curated summer program, which provides artists with subsidized space and equipment, as well as technical support.

DIRECT ARTS is an intercultural and interdisciplinary theater and film company founded by award-winning producer Victoria Linchong. Their main artistic purpose is to promote and produce plays and films that explore the intersection between cultural groups, and their aim is to provide a platform for literate plays and films addressing real world concerns with ethically diverse ensemble casts. By producing and promoting work that is inter-cultural, Direct Arts seeks to challenge the ghettoization of minorities in mainstream media and develop greater public awareness of a substantial body of plays and films that holds a more truthful mirror to New York City, America and the world.
