Earle Brown Music Foundation Announces TIME SPANS FESTIVAL 2017

The Earle Brown Music Foundation is pleased to announce the TIME SPANS Festival in New York City. Scheduled from August 1 to 5, 2017, TIME SPANS 2017 will include five concerts, performed by three of the best North American specialized groups for new repertoire: Talea Ensemble (NYC), JACK Quartet (NYC), and Bozzini Quartet (Montreal). TIME SPANS is dedicated exclusively to the presentation of twenty-first century music. The events will take place at the DiMenna Center for Classical Music in Manhattan. The festival is produced and presented by the Earle Brown Music Foundation (EBMF). Artistic Director for TIME SPANS is Thomas Fichter. The name TIME SPANS is taken from the title of an orchestra piece by the American composer Earle Brown.

August 1 and August 2, 2017, 8:00 pm: Talea Ensemble

- Steven Takasugi, Diary of a Lung (2017)*

(Premiere of new version for ensemble and electronics)

- Hans Tutschku, periods of existence (2016)

- 8 new works by composers Martin Rane Bauck (Norway); Christine Burke (USA); Mayu Hirano (Japan); Hunjoo Jung (South Korea); Weston Olencki (USA); Sam Salem (UK); Jeffery Shivers (USA); Jason Thorpe Buchanan (USA)

All works presenTed August 1 and 2 composed by the participants of the EBMF International Summer Academy for Young Composers. Led by a faculty of Prof. Chaya Czernowin, Dr. Steven Takasugi, and Dr. Hans Tutschku, the EBMF International Summer Academy for Young Composers is a collaboration between EBMF and Avaloch Farm Music Institute. Avaloch Farm Music Institute - located in Boscawen, NH - will provide meeting spaces and lodging for the composers during a one-week learning residency and retreat in July 2017. EBMF will then host all participants in New York City and produce their music in two TIME SPANS concerts. The full 18-musician Talea Ensemble will be available to the composers, with the option to use electroacoustic elements and live electronics. (Conductor: Jeffrey Means; sound: Caley Monahon-Ward)

Bozzini's CD featuring these two masterpieces has already become a critically acclaimed recording. TIME SPANS brings the music live to New York City.

August 5, 2017, 8:00 pm: Talea Ensemble

Georg Friedrich Haas, Hyena (2016)**

Mollena Lee Williams-Haas, storyteller

*World premiere **US premiere ***NYC premiere

The final concert of the festival presents the USA premiere of this intense work. Storyteller Mollena Lee Williams-Haas will be the soloist, performing her own autobiographical text in this composition by her husband Georg Friedrich Haas.
