Award-winning actress and singer Dianne Dixon has joined a stellar lineup of actresses for the Brooklyn premiere of Hair'itage the Play - The Journey of Sistahs with Their Hair, which will open at The Black Lady Theater on Friday May 12 at 8pm.

Written, produced and directed by award winning playwright Niccole Nero Gaines, with choreography by Melissa Monconduit, Hair'itage The Play is a captivating narrative that tells the stories of six women and their journey with their hair. Each character shares experiences of their complicated relationships with their hair, revealing private dreams and fears, as well as the acceptance and rejection of lovers, family, friends and self.

Dixon portrays the character 'Loc Hair Sistah,' the feisty, funny, stubborn West Indian member of the sextet, who refuses to be defined by the unique and all too often misunderstood hairstyle she wears.

For the Jamaican born Dixon, who has actually worn her hair in locks for over a decade, the role has proven both challenging and cathartic.

"Both as a woman and as an artist, the decision I made to wear my hair this way has proven revelatory to me in so many ways," she says. "The assumptions people make about you and your background, your religion and even your morals, based on your hair, are astonishing. So both personally and professionally, I can definitely relate to the dilemmas that my character faces. As an actress too, I'm constantly faced with the decision regarding whether the roles available to me will be restricted by my hairstyle. Doing this show has really allowed me to re- examine my own relationship with my hair in a way I hadn't before and it's been an amazing journey so far."

Dixon's theatrical appearances include regional and Off Broadway productions across a range of genres, such as Ain't Misbehavin', One of Our Sons is Missing, An Old Woman Remembers, Massinissa- Lord of Thunder and Karl O' Brian Williams' Not About Eve, at the 2013 National Black Theater Festival in Winston Salem North Carolina.

She has been nominated for the Audelco Award- New York's highest honor for Off Broadway black theater - on two occasions, as Best Supporting Actress- first for the musical Jamaica and again for the drama Dinner at The Manse . She is also a recipient of the New York City Council Award and Proclamation for Excellence in the Arts.

Following its first performance on Friday May 12 at 8pm, Hair'itage - the Play will continue its run on Saturday May 13 with two performances at 3pm and 8pm, followed by a special Mother's Day performance on Sunday May 14 at 3pm. Thereafter the show will have an open ended run playing Friday evenings only at 8pm. The Black Lady Theatre is located at 750 Nostrand Avenue in Brooklyn, NY 11216.
