Daughters of Troy announces the 2017 Apprentice Company. This marks the first education initiative for the company. As they return to Governors Island in New York this year, to present The Persephone Project through Barton Booth's MAKE ROOM initiative, the company aims to foster the development of young artists.

Young women in undergraduate actor training programs were invited to apply, by invitation only, to the program. They will be coached as theatre makers (writing and acting, and one in PR) in collaboration with visual artists, as part of a week long residency on Governors Island. Apprentices selected will each be paired with a mentor, all with teaching experience and Masters of Fine Arts degrees from leading Universities including NYU, the University of Central Florida and The Old Globe/USD. This year's Apprentices are: Cortney Silber, Marianna King, Elizabeth Mattera and Nicole Moralas.

"As a female focused company composed of professional performers and educators, it seems only natural that we begin to cultivate the next generation of theatre makers" said Artistic Director Aubrey Saverino. "We believe in women supporting and lifting each other up," added Artistic Producer and Director of the Apprentice Training Program, Brooke M. Haney. "I would have loved to be mentored by a professional actor when I was still in undergrad," she continued, "and I always want my students to have success, however they define it, faster and easier than I did." Students invited to apply to the Apprentice Company are all students at Marymount Manhattan College, where Haney is a Professor.

Performances of the Apprentice Company's works-in-progress will be shown over the weekend alongside the Daughters of Troy Company Members. Saturday, Sept. 2 & Sunday, Sept. 3 at 1pm, 2pm, 3pm & 4p at Building 8A in Nolan Park on Governors Island.

Daughters of Troy is a collaboration between theatre and visual artists led by Aubrey Saverino in partnership with RE:ARTISTE. The company uses classical text, visual art, music and dance to deconstruct female archetypes in site-specific performance installations inspired by the Trojan War.

Barton Booth selected Daughters of Troy for a week long residency on Governors Island in August 2016, and the ensemble is thrilled to return again this summer. Excerpts from Daughters of Troy were also presented at Dixon Place in November 2016.

Barton Booth is mostly a theatre company. We make plays, host events in big and small spaces, gather stories, share stories, publish a magazine, nurture collaboration between artists, create opportunities for artist development, throw jamborees, forge relationships, and generally try to make things that are interesting and vital.

Barton Booth has invited directors, creators, choreographers, musicians, writer/director teams, ensembles, and participatory theater makers to spend one week on Governors Island this summer to develop new work, explore ideas, devise, explore collaboration, and practice their chops. Visit bartonbooth.com/makeroom for more information.

RE:ARTISTE is an international art organization exposing amateur and professional artists to curators, buyers, art enthusiasts. Go to www.reartiste.com.
