Aizzah Fatima Performs Dirty Paki Lingerie In NYC
Dirty Paki Lingerie, a solo show written and performed by Aizzah Fatima, bares the lives of six Pakistani-American females as they air their dirty lingerie while struggling to find their place at the chaotic juncture of two very different cultures. The show, directed by Erica Gould, premieres July 16th at The Midtown International Theater Festival at the Dorothy Strelsin Theater at the Abingdon Complex located on 312 W. 36th St.
Dirty Paki Lingerie aims to make women wearing head scarves sexy, and arranged marriages acceptable. It shatters the stereotypes of Muslims as being terrorists, or of Muslim women as being oppressed. The montages presented give a dynamic look into the Muslim experience in America, and ask such vital questions as, "Is it halal to wear sexy lingerie for your future husband?" and "How much sexting is too much sexting?"
The playwright, and performer Aizzah Fatima explains why this show is close to her heart, "I started writing this show because I wanted to create a positive image of Muslims. I soon realized I would settle for any image other than a terrorist because that is all we saw Muslims as being portrayed in the media in recent years. I wanted to show people how we are just like everyone else by showing them a different side of the Pakistani American community that they don't usually get to see."Saturday, July 16 at 2pm
