Abingdon Theatre Co.'s Pop Up Playhouse to Present ALICE IN WONDERLAND, 9/7-8

Pop Up Playhouse, presented by Abingdon Theatre Company, kicks off its 2013-14 Season with FREE performances of ALICE IN WONDERLAND by James Armstrong, adapted from Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking-Glass,"on Saturday, September 7 and Sunday, September 8, at 11am both days, at the June Havoc Theatre (312 West 36th Street). Kim T. Sharp directs.

Follow Alice down the rabbit hole as she converses with a Cheshire Cat, attends a mad tea-party, plays croquet with the Queen of Hearts and battles the Jabberwocky. A mix of live actors and puppets perform the classic story in a way you've never seen it before. This enchanting stage version is intended for ages 5 through 11, but is sure to please parents as well.

Playwright James Armstrong returns to Abingdon Theatre Company where is his play FOGGY BOTTOM premiered in 2006 and played to sold-out houses. He has written numerous plays for young audiences, including the one-act plays MUDDIN' IN CHUMUCKLA and THE PIRATE PRINCESS, as well as an adaptation of A CHRISTMAS CAROL and DICKENS CONDENSED, a play about Charles Dickens.

Director Kim T. Sharp is Abingdon Theatre Company's Associate Director and Literary Manager. For ATC, he has directed CRY HAVOC, DREAMS OF FRIENDLY ALIENS, DANIELLA USES DIRTY WORDS, TEDDY TONIGHT!, DAISY IN DREAMTIME, BEAUTIFUL CLEAR-EYED WOMAN, and LITTLE FISHES.

Cast and creative team for ALICE IN WONDERLAND are to be announced.

Pop Up Playhouse (PUP), presented by Abingdon Theatre Company, develops new theatre for audiences of all ages. It's a place where stories, puppets, folk-tales, masks, dramas, and comedies are given the time and audience to grow. PUP is the kind of place that makes audiences feel good.

On September 21 and 22, 2013, get a sneak peak of Puppet Phactory's new show for Pop Up Playhouse, MOMMA JUNK, during the World Maker Faire New York at the New York Hall of Science (47-01 111th Street, Queens).

Part science fair, part county fair, and part something entirely new, Maker Faire is an all-ages gathering of tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, science clubs, authors, artists, students, and commercial exhibitors. Maker Faire is primarily designed to be forward-looking, showcasing makers who are exploring new forms and new technologies. But it's not just for the novel in technicAl Fields: Maker Faire features innovation and experimentation across the spectrum of science, engineering, art, performance and craft. Puppet Phactory is a collective of artists brought together to produce the puppet-play MOMMA JUNK. It is one of the first companies to open-source a performance. Makers are invited to build puppets for MOMMA JUNK. The final puppets chosen will be beta-tested at Pop Up Playhouse in New York City in February 2014.

Also, look for Abingdon Theatre Company and Pop Up Playhouse at the Fashion BID's 9th Annual Kite Flight on Sunday, September 22. Details to be announced soon.

ALICE IN WONDERLAND runs Saturday, September 7 and Sunday, September 8 at 11:00am at Abingdon Theatre Company's June Havoc Theatre (312 West 36th Street), for audiences ages 5-11.
