92nd Street Y announces the 2014 line-up for Lyrics & Lyricists, with Deborah Grace Winer in her sixth season as series artistic director. To offer their unique perspectives on the American Songbook, L&L guest artistic directors this year feature three Tony Award winners-a director (Kathleen Marshall, in her L&L debut), music director (Ted Sperling) and lyricist (David Zippel)--a top musical theater historian (Robert Kimball), and Broadway royalty (Ted Chapin of The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization).
Individual tickets and subscriptions are on sale now, with single ticket prices from $55. Please call 212-415-5500 or go to www.92Y.org/Lyricsfor more information.
As Deborah Grace Winer says about the country's preeminent American Songbook series: "The legendary jazz guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli once remarked, 'If it's not fun, we should all go home.' That's how we feel at Lyrics & Lyricists...especially about our new season. With our stellar guest artistic directors-including our newest family member Kathleen Marshall-and performers and musicians from the cream of Broadway, jazz and cabaret, our one-of-a-kind concert style allows us to break out of the mold with exciting narrative journeys and great, great music."
L&L shows are Saturday at 8 pm, Sunday at 2 and 7 pm, and Monday at 2 and 7:30 pm. Subscriptions to the five-concert series running from January to June start at $225. Individual tickets start at $52; 92nd Street Y will also offer an "under-35" ticket price for all performances, with $25 individual tickets and $100 season subscriptions.

PANNING FOR GOLD: GREAT SONGS FROM FLOP SHOWS
David Zippel, Artistic Director and Host
Sometimes a masterful song finds itself in the midst of an unsuccessful show. The show fades, but the song remains. For example, the not-so-hot Very Warm for May gave us the very cool "All the Things You Are"; the timeless "Here's That Rainy Day" came out of the less-than-sunnyCarnival in Flanders. Tony Award-winning lyricist David Zippel (City of Angels, Disney's Hercules) picks and polishes these hidden gems in a show that's perfect for the Broadway buff.
