Smith Street Stage Brings New Adaptation of KING LEAR Off-Broadway
Smith Street Stage will present its first full-length off-Broadway show in September with Lear's Shadow, an original adaptation by Ms. Hopkins of Shakespeare's King Lear. Directed by Beth Ann Hopkins with original music by Elliot Roth, Lear's Shadow will perform September 5th through 22nd at the Jeffrey and Paula Gural Theater at the A.R.T./New York Theatres on West 53rd St.
In Lear's Shadow, a young girl has run away to her grandmother's attic, a space for forgotten objects covered with drop cloths and dusty time. When searching through a stack of old books, she opens one up to reveal that the words literally come alive off the pages as characters and creatures emerge around her and begin to tell her the story of King Lear. Lear's Shadow is a classic story, retold through the eyes of a child.
The cast for Lear's Shadow includes Louis Butelli, Sarah Dacey Charles (Les Miserables, Bway & Into the Woods at Barrington Stage), Pete McElligot (Don Juan at the Pearl Theatre Company), Aileen Wu, Noelle Franco, Jonathan Hopkins, Kate Eastman (Romeo & Juliet at The Guthrie), Ashley Scott, Hannah Sloat (War Horse, Bway), Vanessa Butler (Queens for a Year at Hartford Stage), & Kieron Anthony.
