2010 River To River Festival Kicks Off Today

Offering something for everyone, the ninth annual River To River® Festival today unveiled a stellar line-up of free music, dance, and cultural events that firmly establishes Lower Manhattan as the city's summer arts capital.

Named "one of the city's most compelling summer series" by the New York Times, the River To River Festival is New York's largest free summer arts festival. Founded in 2002 to help revitalize Lower Manhattan after September 11th, the festival draws hundreds of thousands of people each year to Downtown's spectacular waterfront. The events span venues from the World Financial Center and Rockefeller Park on the Hudson River to Castle Clinton National Monument, Wagner Park, and Battery Park at Manhattan's tip to The Elevated Acre and The Seaport on the East River.

The 2010 River To River Festival presents an almost daily schedule of free events, from flagship annual events like The Bang on a Can Marathon, Children's Day at The Seaport, The 4th of July Concert in Battery Park, and Movies on the Elevated Acre to showcases for hotly-tipped artists like YACHT, Tiempo Libre, and choreographer Paul-André Fortier.

Presented by American Express, the 2010 River To River Festival's schedule highlights include:

• Hailed as "the country's most provocative and consistently entertaining new-music event" by the Village Voice, the annual Bang on a Can Marathon at the World Financial Center Winter Garden draws huge crowds for a 12-hour marathon of mind-boggling, genre-bending music. This year's line-up includes the highly-anticipated U.S. premiere of Fausto Romitelli's Professor Bad Trip; a Bang on a Can All-Stars' premiere with Mira Calix; and Balinese Gamelan. (June 27)

• With tall ships as the backdrop, The Seaport continues to showcase rising and established indie music stars with Bear in Heaven (July 9), Thee Oh Sees (July 16), Free Energy and Best Coast (July 23), Avi Buffalo (July 30), and YACHT (August 6). The Seaport's kick-off show on July 2 will be announced in the coming weeks.

• The early evening concert series at Rockefeller Park, complete with stunning Hudson River sunset, includes: StEve Hackett and Renaissance (June 23rd), Beth Orton (June 30), Poets House's celebration of the poetry and music of Haiti starring Orchestre Septentrional (July 7), Haiti's oldest big band orchestra, Jimmy Webb and Martin Rivas (July 14), and Burning Spear (July 21)

• The annual 4th of July concert at Battery Park expands this year with music for all ages, including Dan Zanes and Friends performing Broadway classics, acclaimed Columbian band La Cumbiamba eNeYé!, and a participatory parade of 76 Trombones. The Broadway2Battery theme continues at Castle Clinton National Monument with a trio of concerts that includes Antibalas (July 22), the band behind the Broadway hit FELA!

• One of the city's best outdoor screening series returns with Movie Nights On The Elevated Acre, showcasing classic New York features paired with indie shorts screened on an open-air rooftop plaza overlooking the East River. The lineup includes four films united around the Broadway2Battery theme: Broadway Danny Rose (July 29), Auntie Mame (August 5), The Country Girl (August 12), and The Muppets Take Manhattan (August 19).

• The annual Children's Day at the Seaport culminates with the spectacular Target Fireworks, featuring a special performance by The Apples in Stereo accompanied by the Brooklyn Youth Chorus. During the day, families can enjoy performances by Gordon from Sesame Street, Angelina Ballerina, and more, while meeting their favorite storybook characters like Clifford the Big Red Dog, Curious George, and Madeline. (June 26)

• The Joyce Theater co-presents 30 x 30 (July 16-August 19), in which acclaimed choreographer Paul-Andre Fortier performs a 30-minute dance in front of One New York Plaza at the same time of day for 30 consecutive days.

• LMCC's Sitelines 2010 presents new site-specific work at a variety of downtown venues by today's most exciting choreographers, including Phil Soltanoff (July 19-22, The Elevated Acre), Yoshiko Chuma (July 7 and 8, LentSpace), and Tali Hinkis and Kyle Lapidus's LoVid (August 9-12, One Chase Manhattan Plaza).

• Tiempo Libre, one of the most exciting young Latin bands, performs for two nights with a different special guest each night. (World Financial Center Winter Garden, August 4; Rockefeller Park, August 5)

• Wagner Park, with its view of the Statue of Liberty, hosts its wildly popular Latin music series with Plena Libre (July 28), Conjunto Imagen (August 4), and Tony Vega & His Orchestra (August 11).

This exhibition showcases video, animation, writing, photography, painting, sculpture, fashion and graphic design by teenage artists who have earned national recognition through The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Weather Beacon is an oracle for the digital age. Merging Wi-Fi technology, industrial engineering, movement and light, this kinetic sculpture invites the public to connect to both physical and invisible surroundings. Weather Beacon receives information from the Internet and emits a code of flashing lights, forecasting the weather for a curious public. Sculpture operates 24 hours a day, though December 31. Undercurrents & Exchange is a rumination on the conundrum of love, infatuation and connection in modern America, manifested in a series of lunch-hour performances. Each day artists present a new dance grappling with improbable relationships and unearthing the hidden, interpersonal undercurrents daily routine. These daily dances are episodic and will culminate on July 23 when performed together to reveal their underlying meaning. Interdisciplinary artist duo LoVid leads a team of performers and audience members through an obstacle course, carrying electronic components from one side to another to build an electronic musical instrument that produces live sound. Puerto Rican singer Tony Vega began his career in a teenage rock band, but was soon captivated by Afro-Caribbean rhythms.
