Kverndokk’s musical drama returns. “Sigismund and Gunhild ... Sigismund and Gunhild” resounds the cry between the slag heaps in the old mining town of Røros. The married priest Sigismund and the young women Gunhild defy prejudices, obligations and norms to see each other. Can the strength of love overcome society’s ethical rules? Are there those who can come through the inner conflict that arises from this dilemma? The story is based on Johan Falkberget’s enthralling novel. Espen Langvik plays the demanding role of the charismatic priest Sigismund, with Angelica Voje as Gunhild. The rich gallery of personalities shows the full breadth of our ensemble. Composer Gisle Kverndokk and librettist Ivar Tindberg play out the conflict in a taut, dramatically tense work.
This production had its world premiere in Oslo’s Youngstorget square in 2005, when it proved a big success with audiences. Now it returns in a new adaptation for our Main Stage.
This production has been invited to the centennial opera festival in Savonlinna, Finland. From the world premiere in 2005.
