Presented by the Washington National Opera and the Bergen International Festival, in collaboration with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra.
Marco Polo's legendary journey of discovery from Italy to China is the starting point for this
the weave of an opera. Here merging different languages, cultures and eras and of the journey
it becomes both the Beijing opera, Japanese kabukiteater, Indonesian shadow theatre and Tibetan
rituals.
While moving us geographically through the show, moving
us into an inner landscape where figures like Dante, Shakespeare and Li Po
acting as interlocutors. The Chinese composer Tan Dun has set
their mark on the world music scene with works that exceed the limits between Eastern and
Western music traditions, art, music and multimedia performance. Dun has been
awarded several of the most prestigious music awards including Grammy and Oscar for
best film music in Crouching tiger, Hidden Dragon.
In this production it is water-bearing element, in addition to costumes and dance.
Water is one of the main themes of the Festival 2013.
