A meeting between traditional Sami music and modern pop. When the Oslo-based artist Kajsa Balto (b. 1988) released her first single "Vri Alde" in 2016, she received a lot of positive attention for her Sami and joik-inspired version of the Norwegian folk tune "Opp Fjellet." Since then, she has released two albums "Smi sohka" (Sami kin) in 2017 and "Buot eall" (Everything lives) in 2020 both of which have received excellent reviews.Reviewers have highlighted Balto's strong and powerful voice and a soundscape where primordial power and modernity blend together in a fusion between modern pop music and world music with strong roots in traditional Sami joik. In terms of lyrics, she often addresses themes such as sustainability and respect for all living things, as the title of her latest album also tells. In 2018, Kajsa Balto participated in the mentor program at Riksscenen (the Norwegian stage for traditional music and dance), and in 2020 she received the Sami Parliament's work scholarship for younger newly established artists.(Photo Credit: rjan Marakatt Bertelsen)
