Music that captures the American soul.Bergen International Festival composer Missy Mazzoli writes opera, orchestral and chamber music, in addition to performing herself. This all-American concert not only features a world premiere by this composer from Brooklyn, but also provides an opportunity to experience her as a soloist.Missy Mazzoli performs her Grammy-nominated work Vespers for Violin with Peter Herresthal, who has made his mark with interpretations of modern violin concertos with orchestras and ensembles worldwide, and has been rewarded with three Spellemann prizes (the Norwegian Grammy award). The Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra performs the world premiere of the orchestral version of Mazzoli's "Dark with Excessive Bright." The work, originally written for double bass and chamber orchestra, is "loosely based in Baroque idioms," and has its title from John Milton's "Paradise Lost," referring to a surreal and evocative description of God, written by a blind man.The rest of the program is also American, and includes works by George Walker and John Adams. Charles Ives's third symphony, "The Camp Meeting," gained him the Pulitzer Prize in 1947. Unlike his other symphonies, it was composed for chamber orchestra. Harking back to the US of the 19th century through its use of traditional hymns, each movement is a scene from the religious camp meetings of that era, accurately encapsulating the American soul.(Image: Peter Herresthal, Missy Mazzoli; Credit: Caroline Tompkins)
