Evidence, A Dance Company

Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at 8:30 p.m.

$40 in-house, $4 lawn

Founded by choreographer Ronald K. Brown in 1985, Evidence, A Dance Company brings the D.C. premiere of a Wolf Trap co-commissioned dance to the Filene Center. Set to the timeless music of Stevie Wonder, this rhythmic journey fuses African, modern, and hip-hop forms to present "undeniably powerful" dancing (The Washington Post). Evidence, A Dance Company is based out of Brooklyn, New York but has toured both across the United States and abroad and focuses on integrating traditional African dance with contemporary choreography and spoken word. According to Brown, his dances combine Latin American, Caribbean, and African cultural elements to represent "the human experience."

Learn from the choreographer himself in a modern dance Master Class held by Ronald K. Brown the morning of the performance from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

Alison Krauss & Union Station

Bluegrass connoisseurs Alison Krauss & Union Station arrive at Wolf Trap for an evening of expert fiddle playing, angelic harmonies, and top notch musicianship from some of the most highly revered artists in the business. Krauss began playing with her band, Union Station, at age 16 and has since become one of folk music's most respected and talented individuals. Since her 1987 debut, Too Late to Cry, Krauss has won a record 26 GRAMMY Awards-more than any other female artist in history. By 1995 she had brought bluegrass mainstream success with the Top 10 album Now That I've Found You: A Collection, and her career has only gained momentum ever since. In 2011 Krauss and Union Station released Paper Airplane, which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Top Country Albums, Bluegrass Albums, and Folk Albums charts, proving that her influence on music is as wide-reaching as ever.

Jerry Douglas

Perhaps the world's most renowned Dobro player, Jerry Douglas has recorded with Alison Krauss & Union Station on five albums since 1999's Forget About It and is now an integral part of the iconic bluegrass band. Douglas's collaborations with Union Station and various other musicians, as well as his solo work, have garnered him an impressive 12 GRAMMY Awards, and he has been named Musician of the Year by both the Country Music Association (three times) and the Academy of Country Music (11 times). Lauded as "Dobro's matchless contemporary master" by the New York Times, Douglas continues to utilize his musical brilliance both in recordings and on tour with Alison Krauss & Union Station this summer.

Dawes

Hailing from North Hills, California, folk-rock band Dawes returns to Wolf Trap for the second time this summer, having played with Bright Eyes and M. Ward at the Filene Center in June. Influenced by the acoustic and vocal harmonies that made the Laurel Canyon area famous, the group's first album-aptly titled North Hills-was released in 2009. Rolling Stone compared the album's sound to Gram Parsons and Neil Young, and says that "performing runs in the band's blood." Dawes's second album, Nothing is Wrong, was met with as much, if not more, critical acclaim upon its release this past June. Huffington Post raved, "Each song on Nothing is Wrong is a deeply fulfilling journey delivered with expert language and restraint atop one of the best rhythm sections playing today."
