The Jackson Gallery At The Town Hall Theatre Hosts Evolving Patterns Exhibit

By:

It may come as a surprise, but though Darwin did not sketch much, the visual arts did influence his thinking. Eventually, as his theories and observations became more widely known, they had, and continue to have, an influence on the visual arts in return. The new exhibition, "Evolving Patterns: In Honor of Darwin's 200th Birthday" celebrates this notion. The exhibit opens at the Jackson Gallery at Town Hall Theater with a reception during the November 13 Arts Walk, from 5 -7 pm. The reception is free and open to the public.

The "Call for Art" for this first juried show at the Jackson Gallery asked local artists to respond visually to their notions of what Darwin means to them. The jury, comprised of Ken Pohlman, from the Middlebury College Museum of Art, art collector Alice Berninghausen, and Helen Young, Middlebury College Professor of Biology, chose works from a wide range of submissions that included oil and watercolor paintings, photographs, prints, and collages.

The work of 22 local artists will be represented: Suki Fredericks, Kirsten Hoving, Tad Merrick, Abigail Klock, Ray Hudson, Carolyn Shattuck, Max Kraus, Peter Langrock, Graziella Weber-Grassi, Linda Evans, Bobbi Carnwath, Rachel Baird, Jennifer Neil, Hannah Sessions, Carol Calhoun, Claudia Carl, Lynne Barton, Pat Todd, Barbara Ganley, Gayl Braisted, Kate Gridley and Moria Robinson.

In keeping with Town Hall Theater holiday tradition, the 40 images in this group exhibit are small and affordable-ideal gifts in support of local artists!

The exhibit runs through December 23 at the Jackson Gallery at Town Hall Theater, on Merchants Row, Middlebury. Regular gallery hours are Monday - Saturday from noon - 5 pm. For information, call 802-382-9222.
