McLean Community Center Hosts Outing to MARY POPPINS et al as Summer '10 Events

The McLean Community Center of McLean, Virginia will be hosting various events this summer. 

Summer classes in various subjects will begin May 17 for district residents and May 24 for all others.  For more information, call the Center at 703-790-0123, TTY: 711 or visit http://www.mcleancenter.org/.

The 2009-2010 Governing Board of the McLean Community Center will hold its last meeting at 7:30pm on May 26. Immediately after the outgoing board adjourns, the incoming 2010-2011 board will convene and elect officers for the coming year.  All MCC Governing Board meetings are open to the public. Those who wish to speak during "Citizen Comment" at the beginning of the meetings are asked to call 703-790-0123, TTY: 711, to be placed on the agenda; this number can also be called for more information.

On May 26 at 8pm, the center will present Time for Three (Tf3).  Members Zachary De Pue (violin), Nicolas Kendall (violin) and Ranaan Meyer (double bass) met while studying at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. While all three maintain careers in classical music as soloists, chamber musicians and members of the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Baltimore and Minnesota symphonies, as Tf3 they play bluegrass, Leonard Cohen, The Beatles and even funk.  Tickets will be $32 ($10 for district residents) and can be purchased now at the Alden Theatre Box Office, online, or by phone (703-573-SEAT) through Ticketmaster.

On May 30 at 3pm, the center will present a Young Soloists Recital as part of its Concerts at the Alden series. This showcase for chamber music in Northern Virginia will feature piano students Evelyn Mo, Ryo Kaneko, Sarah Grace Barham and harp student Angelina Savoia. The Concerts at the Alden series is sponsored by the Music Friends of the Fairfax County Public Library and the Alden Theatre at the McLean Community Center. Admission is free, and tickets are not required.

On June 4, the center will hold a summer swing dance from 8-11pm; complimentary dance instruction will be offered by Fred Astaire Studios from 7-8pm.  Live music for the event will be provided by For Dancers Only. Appetizers will be served, and a cash wine bar and other beverages will be available.  The cost will be $25 per person ($15 for district residents).  The event is co-sponsored by Friends of McLean Community Center.

On June 5 at 2pm, the center will present The Sippy Cups.  The Sippy Cups will perform their  live show, which includes giant balloons, confetti cannons, aerialists and costumed characters bringing the songs to life.  According to Cookie Magazine, "This innovative San Francisco band doesn't just play rock and roll, it plays WITH rock and roll, adding mischievous layers to a classic punk-funk sound."  The cost will be $20 ($16 for district residents) and tickets can now be purchased at the Alden Theatre Box Office, online, or by phone (703-573-SEAT) through Ticketmaster.

On August 8, the center will host an outing to the Tony-award winning musical MARY POPPINS at The Kennedy Center. The musical combines P.L. Travers's book about an umbrella-flying nanny with Disney's film and features songs such as "Chim Chim Cher-ee" and "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious."  The event will cost $190 per person ($185 for district residents), which includes deluxe motor coach transportation, lunch at Sequoia Restaurant on the Georgetown waterfront, orchestra seats at the Kennedy Center, and driver's tip. The event will begin at the center at 10:30am; the bus will depart promptly at 10:45am.  The tour will return at 5pm.  The deadline to register is July 7.
