Christopher K. Morgan Premieres DISSOLVING at The Alden, Now thru 3/15

By:

The Alden in McLean will present the world premiere of a groundbreaking new dance created by Christopher K. Morgan & Artists (CKM&A), which explores themes related to climate change. "Dissolving" will be presented along with three other works for two evenings, at 8 p.m. tonight, March 14, and Saturday, March 15. Tickets are $27/$18 for McLean tax district residents. The theatre is located at 1234 Ingleside Avenue, inside the McLean Community Center.

CKM&A returns to The Alden for a third year, having presented "movement" in 2013 and "Limited Visibility" in 2012.

"Dissolving" artfully explores themes of water pollution and conservation and will utilize collected rainwater in both the set design and the percussion score. "I have a deep affinity for water, perhaps because my parents were both born on islands," says the Native Hawaiian Morgan. "It's a powerful force full of grace and fluidity, yet it is so fragile. "Dissolving" will examine the sounds and environment water creates, but as the water has been collected over time, there is an inherent metaphor about conservation." The creative team consists of Artistic Director Christopher K. Morgan, Dance Exchange Resident Artist Matthew Cumbie, composer Jonathan Kolm, lighting designer Brian S. Allard and costume designer Angella Foster.

CKM&A will also present the company premiere of Morgan's 2013 work "Selective Sync," which was originally commissioned by the American University Dance Program. According to Morgan, "The work is an exploration of how interpersonal relationships are evolving in today's digital age and how they're created and changed over time." Also on the program will be "Place Names," which originally premiered in June 2013 at the American Dance Institute, a thoughtful and poignant piece about culture, race and personal identity. The fourth piece on the program will be "Cuarto," a duet between cellist Ignacio Alcover and dancer Morgan, that premiered in 2009.

The Saturday performance will be followed by a post-show discussion with choreographers Christopher K. Morgan, Matthew Cumbie and other collaborators. The discussion will be facilitated by the Performing Arts Director of The Alden, Sarah Schallern.
