THE ODD COUPLE (Female Version)

Sunday – March 10

4 PM – 8 PM

Harmony Hall

1660 Lakeview Avenue

Dracut, MA 01826

SYNOPSIS

This play is the female version of Neil Simon’s classic comedy in which two recently divorced women decide to share an apartment and discover the misery of living together. Dysfunctional and reluctant roommates “Florence” Unger and “Olive” Madison are attempting to rebuild their lives, find romance, and keep from killing each other in their NYC apartment. Florence is compulsively neat, Olive is a slob, the upstairs neighbors are a pair of comical, Latin lovers, and their four best friends have ridiculous issues of their own. Hilarious miscommunication, “unintentional use of the wrong word”, and mayhem ensue from curtain up to close.

The play requires the right mix of funny characters, shapes, sizes, nationalities. New York accents are preferred for both the leads and supporting characters (the two men need to put on very bad Spanish accents!) Good comic timing, a commitment to the rehearsal schedule and the right mix of characters will be most important in casting.

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS

Since this is a very funny play with a lot of great one-liners, all roles need strong characterization and excellent comic timing and pacing. Ages are approximate.

WANTED: 6 fluent English-speaking Women and 2 Men all aged 35-60 with good comedic timing

FEMALE ROLES

Olive Madison 50+

Producer of a prime time news program, she’s tough, wise-cracking, and happiest in sloppy clothes. She is not very feminine and rarely puts on a dress. She’s a slob, very untidy but likes it that way. She’s totally irresponsible and unorganized. She’s divorced from her husband, but has a soft touch when it comes to lending him money. She loves sports, and is completely uninterested in anything domestic. She’d rather be out hitting a ball. Leading role, with a lot of dialogue.

Florence Unger 50+

She’s totally neurotic and compulsive about cleanliness and tidiness. She is extremely fussy and is never without a vacuum cleaner or duster in her hand. She is also a hypochondriac and is always throwing her neck or back out. She loves to cook, and entertain, but is just too overbearingly prissy about everything she undertakes. Leading role with a lot of dialogue.

Mickey 40’s – 50+

She is a uniformed policewoman. Part of the regular ‘Trivial Pursuit’ coterie. She’s a tough cop, and proud of it, but a consummate worrywart. She has a quick sense of humor, but maintains a state of constant critical analysis. Could be any nationality. Medium sized role.

Vera 45 – 50+ (if frumpish) or 40 – 45 (if blond bimbo)

She is regularly teased by the others because she is a bit of a “space cadet”. She’s on another planet and doesn’t quite keep up with their wise-cracking. She could be played `older’ but naive, a bit frumpish or a ‘blonde bimbo’ type. Could be any nationality. Medium sized role.

Sylvie 35 – 45

She sees herself quite glamorous but goes a bit overboard with the lipstick, rouge and high heels. She has an ironic and sarcastic sense of humor. Always ready with a wisecrack. Could be any nationality. Medium sized role.

Renee 40’s – 50+

A bit more ‘controlled’ than the others but loves telling stories and gossip. She is fashionable but verging on prim. Could be any nationality. Medium sized role.

MALE ROLES

Manolo and Jesus (pronounced “hay-zoos”) Costazuela

They are two Spanish brothers from Barcelona. They live in the same apartment building as Olive Madison. They are extremely polite, good-natured, have engaging personalities and are quick to laugh (about everything!) They speak with ‘over the top’ Castilian accents and their English is not very good. There is consequently a good deal of hilarious miscommunication. These are very funny roles and should be played totally for laughs. Good comic timing and characterization are essential.
