Paid Developmental Musical Workshop + Staged Reading (Producer-Facing Industry Capture)
Location: Kansas City, MO
Venue: Music Theater Heritage (MTH) — Ruby Room at Crown Center (130-seat theatre)
Project Overview:
In the Tent of Stars will receive a two-week developmental workshop culminating in a one-night staged reading presented before a live audience. The performance will be professionally filmed as a producer-facing industry capture for commercial producers in New York and London.
Director:
Miss Hazel Jade — director with professional Broadway and West End production experience and affiliations with productions including Beetlejuice, Frozen, SpongeBob SquarePants, Once on This Island, and others.
WORKSHOP SCHEDULE
Workshop Rehearsals:
August 1–14, 2026 (Monday–Friday)
9:00 AM – 5:00 PM, including a lunch break
Performance / Filming:
Saturday, August 15, 2026

COMPENSATION
- Principal Roles: $1,500 flat fee (covers workshop + performance/filming)
- Ensemble Roles (4): $750 flat fee (covers workshop + performance/filming)
- Boys’ Understudy / Swing: $1,500 flat fee (covers workshop + performance/filming)
PRODUCTION FORMAT
ON-BOOK / IN-COSTUME
This is a staged reading presentation. Performers will work with scripts in hand and will be fully costumed in period-accurate 1918 attire.
There are no dance requirements for this workshop presentation. Staging will be minimal, with focus placed on vocal excellence, storytelling, and character work.
Youth leads should convincingly read as age peers onstage and on camera.
SEEKING THE FOLLOWING ROLES
YOUTH ROLES
LINCOLN FOSTER (12–14)
Aspirational, earnest boy growing into courage.
Vocal: High Tenor (F#3–C5), contemporary pop/rock musical theatre voice.
Must convincingly play 12–14.
ALEX FOSTER (12)
Trans boy. Ragged, soulful survivalist with deep emotional strength.
Vocal: Countertenor (G3–E5), soulful pop sound with powerful high notes.
Note:
Trans boys and transmasculine performers are encouraged to submit; cis boy performers may also submit. Casting will prioritize talent and role fit.
Must convincingly play 12.
SWING / UNDERSTUDY (BOYS) + “THE SHADOW” (12–14)
Covers Lincoln and Alex. Also performs as The Shadow, a silent physical presence onstage (black Zentai costume).
Compensation: $1,500 flat fee
Must convincingly play 12–14.
ADULT PRINCIPAL ROLES
MARGERY FOSTER (30s)
Former Broadway star; elegant, protective, emotionally guarded.
Vocal: Mezzo-Soprano (A3–A5) with folk/head voice colors.
ROBERTA (30s, Black)
Magnetic vaudeville headliner with commanding stage presence.
Vocal: Contralto (Eb3–Eb5), rich jazz-inflected belt.
OLIVER FOSTER (30s–40s)
Charming Broadway crooner. Charismatic but emotionally fractured.
Vocal: Tenor (C3–Ab4)
HÉLOÏSE (60s–70s+)
The true authority of the tent. Refined, commanding, and deeply intelligent.
Vocal: Alto (F3–E5)
Older performers strongly encouraged.
PETER ABELARD (60s–70s+)
Troupe director and emcee. Intellectual, grounded, quietly powerful.
Vocal: Baritone (A2–F4)
Older performers strongly encouraged.
GEORGE (40s–50s)
Character performer specializing in impersonations (Abe Lincoln / Mark Twain).
Vocal: Baritone (C3–E4)
CHARLEY (20s)
Lanky, warm-hearted comedian and “young dandy.”
Vocal: Bari-Tenor (C3–A4)
ENSEMBLE (4 POSITIONS)
2 Women / 2 Men
Strong singers forming the choral voice of the tent. Ensemble roles are primarily musical with minimal spoken text.
Must be comfortable with tight harmony singing and ensemble blend.
