SPONGEBOB MUSICAL - Fairfield Center Stage


Fairfield Center Stage (Christy McIntosh-Newsom, Artistic Director; Eli Newsom, Executive Producer) is holding OPEN AUDITIONS (in person and video submissions) for its upcoming spring musical production of THE SPONGEBOB MUSICAL on Mon May 2 from 6-7pm (ages 15 and under) and 7-9pm (ages 16 and over) and Tuesday May 3 6-7pm (all ages). The show will run June 17-25 2022 in downtown Fairfield. Seeking a diverse cast of singers, actors, and dancers of all ages/types to join our production. FCS is a community theater group, and all roles are open. Non-Equity, no pay. See below for audition details.

The staff for THE SPONGEBOB includes Joel Fenster (Director), Benjamin Doyle (Music Director), and Lindsay Johnson (Choreographer). SPONGEBOB will run two weekends, June 17 @ 7pm, 18 @ 2pm, 18 @ 7pm, 24 @ 7pm, 25 @ 2pm, and 25 @ 7pm. The production will run downtown Fairfield Ludlowe High School auditorium. Rehearsals are generally Mon-Thurs evenings and Sundays 2-7pm. Required sitzprobe rehearsal (sing through with the orchestra) will occur on either Saturday June 11 @ noon or Sunday June 12 @ noon (date tbd). All tech rehearsals are required, Mon-Thurs June 12-16. Actors will not be needed every day until we get closer to opening. Rehearsals will begin on Sunday May 8 @ 4pm. Safety precautions will be taken seriously per current CDC guidelines during rehearsals and performances.

When:
In person auditions will occur on Mon May 2 from 6-9pm and Tues May 3 from 6-7pm and will be held @ First Church Congregational in downtown Fairfield. If you are unable to attend in-person auditions you may submit your initial audition virtually (see below for submission instructions). Callbacks will occur in person. Appointments are highly recommended for in-person auditions, so that we are able to maintain social distancing. See below for the audition signup link. If you are experiencing symptoms of illness, please cancel your audition appointment and submit an audition video.

Callbacks for SPONGEBOB will take place on Tues May 3 in the evening. Note that not all roles require a callback.

Masks required while indoors per building policy, performers may remove masks when actively auditioning

What to prepare:
Please prepare a brief song (under one minute) in the style of the show (singing from the show is ok). Please bring sheet music in the correct key. A capella singing is discouraged, bluetooth/mobile devices with backing tracks are discouraged.

After reserving an audition time slot, you will receive a link to fill out a digital audition form as well as submit a resume/headshot/recent photo.

VIDEO AUDITION SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:
If you are submitting your audition virtually, please submit (1) a video of you singing (guidelines follow) and (2) the audition form (link below). Video: sing an approximate one-minute section of a song in the style of the show (pop or contemporary musical theatre; singing from the show is ok). Please use an accompaniment track (i.e. karaoke track, piano track, other instrumental track, guitar, etc). Some backing tracks can be found on YouTube. Please no a capella singing, as the production team needs to hear singing with accompaniment.

Email your audition via a private or unlisted YouTube or Vimeo link by no later than 8pm Monday May 2nd to
christy@fairfieldcenterstage.org with the subject line SPONGEBOB AUDITION. Please no email attachments - send a link to a hosted, playable video. Videos that do not meet these requirements will not be considered. If we need to see you at callbacks, you will be notified by Tuesday, May 3rd at 12pm (callbacks will be that evening).

Character Descriptions:
A NOTE ON CASTING: The following are oceanic animated characters. We are open to all genders, ages, physical types, sea creatures, sponges, and land mammals.

SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS (Range: C3-B4) (Lead, Tenor): He is optimistic, innocent, and boyish; energetic and sometimes hyperactive. This actor should have the ability to move well and be extremely physical - unafraid of climbing and being on tall objects. Additionally: Must be naturally funny and have great comedic skills and precision. Strong pop tenor.

SQUIDWARD Q. TENTACLES Role not available

PATRICK STAR (Range: Bb2-Bb4) (Lead, Tenor): Well-intentioned but lacking common sense or skills; kind and somewhat clueless, an innocent; a big softie, who can also be prone to sudden child-like fits of rage or frustration.


SHELDON J. PLANKTON (Range: B2-G#4) (Lead, Tenor): His personality outweighs his size- slick, scheming, nefarious; has the ability to charm; determined, he will do anything to get ahead in life; very greedy, but his heart is still open enough to rekindle a romance with his wife. This character will need to dance and rap skills a plus.


KAREN THE COMPUTER (Range: G#3-F#5) (Female, Supporting; Soprano, Mezzo-Soprano): Glamorous, a robotic housewife of Plankton. She's been there for Plankton's every scheme and plot and has become jaded - she's been there and done that. Strong comic actress, as well as Singer and Mover.


PEARL KRABS (Range: Bb3-F#5) (Female, Supporting, Mezzo-Soprano): Mr. Krabs' bratty teenage daughter. This is a character role with Gospel vocal overtones.


SANDY CHEEKS (Range: A3-E5) (Female, Lead, Mezzo-Soprano, Alto): A brainy and athletic Texan squirrel who came to Bikini Bottom for a research project. She acts as SpongeBob's most trusted ally on their quest to stop the volcano from erupting, using her vast amount of scientific knowledge and brilliant inventions to aid the mission.


EUGENE KRABS (Range: B2-Bb4) (Lead, Baritone): The greedy owner of the Krusty Krab, and employer of SpongeBob and Squidward. While everyone is off panicking about Bikini Bottom's imminent doom, he decides to strike the iron while it's hot and puts on a huge apocalypse sale at his restaurant, exploiting the fear of his fellow fish to make him even richer.

ELECTRIC SKATES (Steven Tuna, Joe Pirhana, Tom Hammerhead) (Tenor, Baritone, Bass): Rock and roll band members, the Skates are hard-core, grungy, heavy metals meet World Wrestling. Strong Dancers, very comfortable on skateboards (need to play guitar while skating), ability to do skateboard tricks a plus. Also open to rollerblade or inline skating if the actor is expert, with tricks available. Strong tap a plus.
