  • For all roles, please sing a short Folk/Rock song of your choosing— please accompany yourself on the instrument that you are most proficient in. There will be a piano in the room. Actors encouraged to bring any instrument(s) in they feel proficient playing

ONCE tells the story of a Dublin street musician who is just about to give up on his dreams when a beautiful young woman takes an unexpected interest in his songs. As the chemistry between them grows, their music and connection soar to powerful and complicated new heights. In this production, their story is told from within a seemingly enchanted Irish Pub (filled with musician patrons), constructed in the middle of a seemingly enchanted patch of nature, just in time for St. Patrick’s Day.

GUY (Male, 30-39, Baritone) A struggling Irish musician, lost and a bit sad. Working with his father in a vacuum repair shop, he is brooding over an ex-girlfriend, but charismatic with extreme appeal. Rock/folk vibe; speaks with an Irish accent; Must play guitar well.

GIRL (Female, 21-30, Mezzo-Soprano with a rock/folk voice) Direct, intelligent, resourceful and witty with a no-nonsense attitude. She’s had to work hard in life but doesn't want sympathy from others.Speaks with a Czech accent. Must play the piano well.

REZA (Female, 25-40, Soprano) Seductive, funny, and smart with a larger than life attitude. Speaks with a Czech accent. Must play the violin/fiddle, cello or clarinet.

EAMON (Male, 25-50, Baritone) Music studio manager/engineer where Guy and Girl record their album. A tough nut to crack, but eventually appreciates Guy’s and Girl’s talents. Speaks with an Irish accent. Plays guitar (piano, Melodica, cajon, and castanets a plus).

DA (Male, 50–65, Baritone)Irish-born— Guy's father, who runs a vacuum-repair shop. A man of few words but caring and warm. Speaks with an Irish accent.

BARUSKA (Female, 50-65, Alto) Girl’s mother— a caring woman with few inhibitions who likes a full house and full stomachs. Speaks with a Czech accent. Plays accordion and/or piano well.

BANK MANAGER (Male, 35-50, Tenor) Prim and proper bank businessman with a secret passion for music. Speaks with an Irish (Cork) accent. Must play guitar (and cello or mandolin is a plus.)

ANDREJ (Male, 25-40, Baritone) An employee at a fast food chain with big dreams; earnest and kind. Speaks with a Czech accent. Must play bass guitar well (ukulele a plus).

SVEC (Male, 25-40, Baritone) An eccentric guy who spends most of his time watching television soap operas and drinking coffee. Speaks with a Czech accent. Must play drums well (banjo, mandolin, guitar a plus).

EX-GIRLFRIEND (Female, 25-40, Mezzo-Soprano, with a rock folk voice) Irish-born. Guy's ex-girlfriend who now lives in New York— sensual and charismatic. Speaks with an Irish accent. Must play violin well (cajon a plus).

EMCEE (Any Gender, 30-50, Baritone or Alto) Irish-born, good-natured and knows how to work a crowd at the local bar, Speaks with an Irish accent. Must play guitar and/or piano well.

BILLY (Male, 30-50, Baritone) Irish-born and has one parent from Spain—owner of the music store where Girl plays piano. Large, loud, and funny but also protective. Speaks with an Irish accent. Must play guitar, cajon, ukulele, and cymbals.
