Fantine: Mezzo. Age range - 21 to 30. A brave young woman, defeated by life, but sustained by her love for her daughter, and clinging to her dignity. We witness her descent to a destitute death.

Thenardier: Tenor. Age range - 40 to 56. An “innkeeper.” The true villain who delights in cheating, robbing, fraud and blackmail, relishing it all with glee. He is tough, brutal, stupid and crafty, and yet irresistible. A character singing voice is best.

Madame Thenardier: Mezzo. Age range - 35 to 55. Thenardier’s partner in crime. Coarse and vulgar, yet captivating. Must have excellent physical comedy skills.

Eponine: Belt. Age range - 15 to 21. Thenardier’s daughter. Streetwise and tough, yet sensitive and lonely. She loves Marius but knows he will never love her.

Cosette: Soprano. Age range - 18 to 25. Daughter of the late Fantine, adopted by Jean Valjean. Strong willed, loving, intelligent, and deeply in love with Marius.

Marius: Tenor. Age range - 20 to 28. The handsome romantic hero. Impulsive, passionate, willful and headstrong, but also sweet and tender, capable of courage and compassion.

Enjolras: High Baritone/Tenor. Age range - 20 to 28. The brave, daring and charismatic leader of the student Revolutionaries. Strong vocal role.

Bishop of Digne: Baritone. Age Range - 45 to 70. A kind and good man who saves Valjean with his compassion and generosity.

Gavroche: Tenor. A young boy, age 9 to 12, with an unchanged voice. Living by his wits on the street, he is brave, witty, a little cocky, and wise beyond his years. Should be small in stature. This role will be double cast.

Young Cosette: Soprano. A little girl, age 7 to 11. Fantine’s daughter, and the underfed, mistreated ward of the Thenardiers, forced into child labor, until rescued by Valjean. This role will be double cast.

Ensemble for Men and Women: Numerous roles for men and women of all ages and types, who inhabit the stage as prisoners, peasants, factory workers, prostitutes, customers, thieves, and revolutionaries. All must be strong singers, able to harmonize, and with strong acting skills. Many ensemble members will play more than one role, and most will have solo lines. Strong opportunity for unique and creative character development. The ensemble is the underpinning for the show, and every character should be memorable.
