The Potomac Playmakers announce auditions for the final show of the Playmakers historic 2018-2019 season, the great Neil Simon comedy Fools!
In the play, Leon Tolchinsky is ecstatic. He's landed a terrific teaching job in an idyllic Russian hamlet. When he arrives, he finds people sweeping dust from the stoops back into their houses and people milking upside down to get more cream. The town has been cursed with Chronic Stupidity for 200 years, and Leon's job is to break the curse. No one tells him that if he stays over 24 hours and fails to break the curse, he too becomes stupid. But, he has fallen in love with a girl so stupid that she has only recently learned how to sit down. Can Leon possibly break the curse in time?
Produced with kind permission by Samuel French and directed by Nic Sigman with Andrew King, Fools will be performed during the weekends of April 26, 2019 and May 3, 2019, with additional performances possible. Auditions for Fools will he held February 4 and February 5, 2019 at The Women's Club, located at 31 S. Prospect Street, Hagerstown, Maryland 21740.
Auditions will begin at 7:00 pm. The cast calls for seven male and three female performers of varying ages. However, most roles of the townspeople can be gender neutral. Auditions will consist of improv exercises and cold readings from the script.The Potomac Playmakers, founded in 1926, is one of the nation's longest running active community theatre groups.

MAGISTRATE: male/female; 50s+, but looks as old as possible (script mentions he's 79).SLOVITCH: male/female; 20s+; a butcher. MISHKIN: male/female; 20s+; delivers the mail.YENCHNA: female; 20s+; a vendor, sassy. DR. ZUBRITSKY: male; 40s-50s; the village doctor, extreme admiration for his daughter, Sophia.LENYA ZUBRITSKY: female; 40s-50s; the doctor?s wife, extreme admiration for her daughter, Sophia. SOPHIA ZUBRITSKY: female; 19; beautiful daughter of the doctor, cannot love anyone, but she has admiration for Leon. GREGOR YOUSEKEVITCH: male; 20s-30s; the count who holds the village in his thrall, proposes to Sophia twice a day and is always rejected. He does not like when school teachers come to town. Note: the stupidity of the villagers is not to be played mean spirited. They are genuinely kind people.
