Casting a workshop performance of “Dear Mom, I’m Gay!” a new musical that tells the story of a young guy coming out to his religious mother. The show has done two successful workshops in Chicago. This will be our first in NYC. All ethnicities are encouraged to apply.
Roles
Dan: Lead, Male, 18-28 Vocal Range- A2-A4 Moves from the Midwest to NYC for college; a little naive and sheltered; starts to explore his sexuality in the city and falls in love; has some great comedic moments but also some very serious scenes.
Mrs. Sarkisian: Lead, Female, 35-60 Vocal Range- G3-C5 Lives in Grand Rapids, Michigan; single mother; her son is her entire world; a “Bible Belt” Christian; struggles to find balance between her faith and her son’s sexuality.
Shaunda: Lead, Female, 18-28 Vocal Range- G3-E5 Dan’s roommate; not a not a very motivated student; has a rough exterior but a very soft heart.
Mrs. Atkins: Supporting, Female, 30-50 Vocal Range- Legit soprano with belt; B3-G5 Shaunda’s mom; her cancer has come back and she doesn’t have much time to live; just wants to make it long enough to see Shaunda graduate.
Steve: Lead, Male, 18-32 Vocal Range- A2-B4 vocal range with strong falsetto Law student in NYC; adopted into a Jewish family but isn’t religious himself; very confident and comfortable with himself but not arrogant; openly gay, falls in love with Dan.
Mrs. Greenburg: Supporting, Female, 30-65 Vocal Range- G3-D5 Must be a comedic Jewish actress. Jewish woman from Queens; unable to have kids, her and her husband adopted Steve; big personality; a bit self absorbed; comes off pushy or nosy but honestly just wants what’s best for people.
Rehearses Nov. 12-17; performs Nov. 18 and Nov. 19.
