Titirangi Theatre Presents The Bellbird by Stephen Sinclair 15th to the 26th of September. The Bellbird is directed by Janelle Bish.

This is New Zealand Theatre at its most exciting and challenging. Its themes are universal, but ultimately it is a story of Aotearoa and the weaving of our indigenous Maori culture with the first European settlers. At the play's heart - a beautiful tale of forbidden romance, and a story that deserves to be told.

A moving and heartrending tale, The Bellbird is set in the 1870s - a time of social and cultural upheaval. Florence is thrown into turmoil when the handsome young Aperahama comes to work at the home of her employer. The play explores the lengths people will go to in order to protect their own, as Florence risks everything she has for true love.

Playwright, screenwriter, director, poet and novelist Stephen Sinclair has won awards for his internationally acclaimed stage comedy ‘Ladies Night' and the screenplay ‘Braindead' (directed by Peter Jackson), and has had a long screenwriting partnership with Academy Award Winners Peter Jackson and Frances Walsh.

Janelle made her debut on Titirangi's stage in 2001 under the direction of Christine Nash, then moved overseas to study her craft at the Gaiety School of Acting in Dublin, Ireland. Janelle worked on the animated show 'bro Town' and co-produced 'Bro Town Live on Stage' for the NZ International Arts Festival in 2008. Currently she is working on a new live action comedy project and continues to develop independent theatre work.
