Downstage Theatre Presents MATES & LOVERS, Mar. 8-12

By: Feb. 14, 2011

Based on Chris Brickell's Montana award-winning book Mates and Lovers: A History of Gay New Zealand, writer, producer & director Ronald Trifero Nelson is bringing his critically acclaimed show to Downstage 8 - 12 March leading up to the 2nd Asia Pacific Outgames in Wellington.

Called "Warm-hearted, cheeky and hot-headed" (New Zealand Herald), Mates and Lovers is both an evocative exploration of our past and a moving reminder that our present is not so perfectly tolerant as we like to believe. Far from a spectre of our past 'hate crimes' have been news in NZ as recently as last December and this January. This gives Mates & Lovers a timely political edge, alongside its beautiful theatricality.

Stretching from pre-colonial to 21st century Aotearoa/New Zealand, Mates and Lovers is a blend of humor and pathos with new choreography by Taiaroa Royal (Tama Ma) and an evocative original score by Samuel Holloway.

Performer Paora Taurima has toured extensively nationally and internationally with several contemporary dance companies and has appeared in TVNZ's Rude Awakenings.  Paora will be joined by Simon K. Leary, a recent graduate from Toi Whakaari.  His solo performance The Election was based on the complex relationships and sexual politics in NZ high schools, and received excellent reviews.

Tickets can be purchased online, by phone at (04) 801 6946 or in person at Downstage's box office. For up-to-date information visit www.downstage.co.nz
