Southern Rep Theatre's SUDDENLY LAST SUMMER Begins 3/7

By:

Southern Rep Theatre has announced details for its upcoming production of Tennessee Williams' SUDDENLY LAST SUMMER, directed by the theatre's Producing Artistic Director Aimée Hayes, and featuring Brenda Currin, Beth Bartley, and Carol Sutton.

"I am so eager to explore the explosive terrain of this play," says Director Aimée Hayes. "Williams was in the middle of extensive psychoanalysis when he was writing SUDDENLY LAST SUMMER which seems to have influenced not only the subject matter of the play, but also the quality of the writing. This is Williams at his most intense, offering up exquisite prose and drawing up indelible characters who will resonate with audiences long after they have left the theatre."

Set in the Garden District of New Orleans, Tennessee Williams' masterwork, SUDDENLY LAST SUMMER, follows a wealthy society matron, Violet Venable, who attempts to lobotomize her niece Catharine in a struggle to cover up the truth about her son Sebastian's sudden death. When her doctor tries to unravel the mystery, will Catharine share the shocking and terrible truth of what happened, or succumb to the pressure to protect the legacy of a powerful family? Presented in partnership with the Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival, SUDDENLY LAST SUMMER raises bold questions about mental illness, sexuality, guilt, brutality and the search for truth.

"At the heart of the play are simply two women grappling with loss," Hayes continues. "One, a mother intensely grieving her child, and the other, a woman haunted by witnessing that death. The play has too often been interpreted through a camp lens. Williams wrote real people who use wit for weapons, and take on the world fearlessly. With our fantastic cast and design team, the exotic Garden District world of Mrs. Venable will be one not to miss."
