Southern Rep Theatre Brings WOLVES to 5th Annual New Orleans Fringe Festival, Now thru 11/18

Southern Rep Theatre continues its 26th Season with the second production of its Lagniappe Series, WOLVES by Steve Yockey, directed by Producing Artistic Director Aimée Hayes, and performed at The Den of Muses, a New Orleans Fringe Festival-managed venue. WOLVES is a National New Play Network Rolling World Premiere and will also premiere this year at Actor's Express in Atlanta, GA; Stray Cat Theatre in Tempe, AZ; and at Celebration Theatre in Los Angeles, CA.

The performance runs from tonight, November 14-18, 2012 with various run times at the Den of Muses (Nov. 14: 7pm, Nov. 16: 11pm, Nov 17: 9pm, Nov. 18: 5pm) and for an extended run November 23-25 at the Shadowbox Theatre (All performances: 8pm). WOLVES features Andrew Farrier, Taylor McClellan, Ben Carbo, and Big Easy Award-winner Kerry Cahill.

Steve Yockey is a tremendous storyteller with an artful hand for mashing up the audacious and macabre with compelling humanity. His work also offers up a visual feast for audiences with mythic characters, sharp humor and dynamic emotional landscapes. WOLVES appealed to us as a potential Fringe production for the simple reason that it is a modern take on a fairy tale gone terribly wrong. With live music, lava lamps, and a tale of creeping paranoia our production at the Den of Muses will feel right at home. -Aimée Hayes, Producing Artistic Director

Ben is a timid young city-dweller who freaks out when his roommate Jack brings home a big bad wolf for a one-night stand. When he tries to "rescue" Jack, Ben sets into motion a dangerous chain of events that will unravel everything in their very small apartment in the very big city. Throw in a peculiar narrator who knows more than she's letting on and this sexy, savagely funny fairy tale for grown-ups twists and turns toward a breathtaking climax. Wolves fuses the worlds of fable and horror in a fascinating story of unrequited love, the virtues of lava lamps, the dangers of storytelling, and the hazards of a handy axe.

Steve Yockey is a roaming member of Atlanta's Out of Hand Theater. His work has been produced throughout the country and in Asia. LARGE ANIMAL GAMES, OCTOPUS, CARTOON, SUBCULTURE (collected short plays) and VERY STILL & HARD TO SEE are published & available from Samuel French. Last season, AFTERLIFE: A GHOST STORY co-world premiered at Southern Rep and New Rep in Boston. HEAVIER THAN... premiered at the Boston Court in Pasadena and BELLWETHER premiered at Marin Theatre Company in Mill Valley, CA. This season, the new play WOLVES will open in Atlanta, New Orleans, Phoenix, San Francisco, & Los Angeles, and the sex farce THE FISHERMAN'S WIFE will open in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Other plays include: PLUTO, WONDER, THE THRUSH & THE WOODPECKER, and FEVERISH. Steve is a Phi Beta Kappa, Summa Cum Laude graduate of the University of Georgia and holds an MFA in Dramatic Writing from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts (2008). After completing a yearlong National New Play Network residency at Marin Theatre Company, he now lives in Los Angeles, CA where he serves as an adjunct professor in the MFA Writing for Performance program at CalArts. The New Orleans Fringe Festival's mission is to nurture emerging and established performing artists by presenting fun, fearless and affordable theater to the community and creating ties between artists, audiences, businesses, and local organizations. A year-round community connector, the Festival unites venues, resources, artists, and audiences together for events that contribute to the cultural strengthening and renewal of New Orleans.

The Den of Muses is a large warehouse, located on Architect Street in the Marigny of New Orleans. It acts as the production and storage space for the floats of the Krewe du Vieux, one of New Orleans' most mythically fabulous Mardi Gras krewes. With colorful surroundings and themed floats lining its walls, the venue's atmosphere creates a mystique of scenery ideal for theatre productions on the fringe.

The Shadowbox Theatre is an intimate live performance theatre, housed in the old Marquer Drugstore building and located in the heart of New Orleans' growing fringe theatre and art scene. The Shadowbox features floor to ceiling red velvet curtains, vintage wood seats, and a completely repositionable setup - the stage and seats can rearrange to fit the specific needs of every show. In addition to housing some of the best local talent, the Shadowbox provides a home for more out of town shows than any other theatre space in New Orleans, regularly featuring acts from Chicago, New York and beyond.
