Southern Rep And WWNO Presents NEW ORLEANS NOIR: THE RADIO PLAYS 12/30

By: Dec. 14, 2010

Southern Rep is storming the airwaves. In a one night only event, Southern Rep and WWNO present NEW ORLEANS NOIR, a Live Recording of two Radio Plays to be aired by WWNO. Two new radio plays, each featuring the city of New Orleans as the central character, have been commissioned for this special event by local favorites, Greg Herren (fiction writer of Chanse MacLeod Mysteries and Scotty Bradley Mystery Series) and Julie Smith (fiction writer of New Orleans Noir short stories). NEW ORLEANS NOIR will be performed at Southern Rep on Thursday December 30th at 7pm. Admission to this event is FREE.

This was an incredibly fun experience. I learned that you can do a whole scene with sound effects! Seeing the actors bring it to life during rehearsal, what a kick that was. I can't wait to see it performed for a live audience!
- Julie Smith, Author

This delightful evening, with live Foley sound effects to round out the live-broadcast experience, will also include short interviews with the writers and Southern Rep Artistic Director, Aimée Hayes. The cast features local favorites Sean Glazebrook (WITH A BANG, THE FOUR OF US), Matthew Mickal (DEBAUCHERY: THE SOAP OPERA), Sean Patterson (DEBAUCHERY: THE SOAP OPERA, FOR BETTER) and Mandy Zirkenbach (DEBAUCHERY: THE SOAP OPERA). Southern Rep began this project in conjunction with WWNO in 2009, and is excited to finally present this unique offering to the New Orleans community.

WWNO is excited to be collaborating with Southern Rep to bring together great talent for this uniquely New Orleans performance and broadcast.
- Paul E. Massen, WWNO

At its core New Orleans is a great place for Noir stories-from French Quarter dames with secrets to hide to late night cocktails on a steamy summer evening. Greg Herren and Julie Smith are masters of the form which will make NEW ORLEANS NOIR the hottest show in town!
- Aimée Hayes, Artistic Director, Southern Rep

This project has been generously supported by the Louisiana Cultural Economy Foundation.

WWNO is the listener-supported NPR radio station for New Orleans and eleven parishes of southeast Louisiana, broadcasting on 89.9 FM, and on KTLN 90.5 FM in the Houma-Thibodaux area. Known as "the source for NPR news and great classical music," WWNO's programs also include jazz and other musical styles, thought-provoking information, lively entertainment, and local news and culture, presented on three separate schedules: the familiar 89.9/90.5 (news, classical, and more) digital WWNO2 (classical, news, talk), and digital WWNO3 (jazz). All can be heard online at wwno.org. WWNO is a public service of the University of New Orleans.

Southern Rep continues its 24th season, producing bold world and regional premieres under the leadership of Artistic Director Aimée Hayes and Managing Director, Marieke Gaboury. In addition to an exciting Mainstage season that takes us on a journey from the dining room table to a 19th Century doctor's examining table to a magical realm inhabited by mythical creatures, Southern Rep @ Le Chat Noir offers a Second Stage season of eclectic, smart, silly and audacious theatrical fare. Southern Rep continues to offer educational programs such as free student matinees, $10 student rush tickets and Academy SRT; as well as providing an artistic home to new works in development in the annual New Play Bacchanal. In Fall 2010, Southern Rep launched a new play award for women of color playwrights, The Ruby Prize, named in honor of civil rights advocate Ruby Bridges.

Southern Rep is the most important driving force in contemporary drama in the Gulf South.
