NOCCA Alum Sullivan Fortner Returns for One Night Only

On Friday, January 20 at 8:00pm, acclaimed pianist and proud NOCCA alum Sullivan Fortner returns to his alma mater for a one-night-only concert with the Sullivan Fortner Trio. The winner of two prestigious awards--a Leonore Annenberg Arts Fellowship and a Cole Porter Fellowship--Sullivan will present an evening of jazz that's perfect for any lover of music, featuring both original compositions and arrangements of standards from the American songbook.

About Sullivan Fortner
Sullivan Joseph Fortner Jr. began playing music by ear at the age of seven. Two years later, he was playing for church choirs throughout New Orleans. By the time he was 11 years old, he'd won a Cox Cable "Amazing Kids Award", and at 13, he enrolled at NOCCA, where he earned scholarships to attend summer jazz programs at the Vail Jazz Institute and the Skidmore Jazz Studies Summer Program. A standout on the stage and in the classroom, Sullivan was valedictorian of his high school class while simultaneously graduating from NOCCA.

While touring with Stefon Harris & Blackout, Christian Scott Quintet, and the Roy Hargrove Quintet, Sullivan completed his Master's degree in Jazz Performance at the Manhattan School of Music under the tutelage of Jason Moran and Phil Markowitz. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Jazz Performance from Oberlin Conservatory of Music. He is the recipient of the prestigious Leonore Annenberg Fellowship, enabling him to study in South India, and the 2015 Cole Porter Fellow of Jazz of the American Pianists Association. He currently performs and travels with the Roy Hargrove Quintet and the Roberta Gambarini Quintet, in addition to being active in the New York jazz scene. His debut recording, "Aria" was released by Impulse Records in October 2015, and garnered acclaim from The New York Times and Downbeat Magazine.
