Arts Classes for Adults Announced for The NOCCA Institute's Summer Studio

Have you ever wanted to take a cooking lesson from acclaimed Chef Frank Brigtsen? How about a music appreciation class from pianist Michael Pellera? Or study writing with author Lara Naughton? This June and July, you can do all that and more at The NOCCA Institute's Summer Studio. Summer Studio is two months of classes and workshops for adults, and they're taught by NOCCA's outstanding faculty, alumni, and visiting artists.

Whether you want to brush up on your tap skills with choreographer Heidi Malnar, perfect your drawing technique with Gary Oaks, get the skinny on movie-making with Isaac Webb, or learn how to copyright your work from attorney Ashlye Keaton, we've got you covered. The Complete Story of New Orleans Traditional Jazz

Click here to register today! This is a one-week intensive on the inception, dissemination, and evolution of New Orleans Traditional Jazz specifically for musicians with prior musical experience. With instructor and New Orleans native son Calvin Johnson, students will explore the musical traditions of New Orleans Jazz from marching bands, brass bands, trad jazz bands, gospel, jazz funerals, and second lines.

Beginner Tap for Adults

Time: Tuesdays in June (6, 13, 20, 27) from 6pm-7pm Instructor: Heidi Malnar

In a fun and relaxed environment, students will learn to shift weight and dance in time, proper placement and weight distribution in their tap shoes, how to accurately articulate all parts of the foot, and of course the ABCs of tap vocabulary (i.e. "the steps"). Once we establish the basics, we learn to build on them, and individual steps will become exercises, progressions, longer combinations, and eventually fully realized choreography! Dancers will also develop an appreciation and understanding of basic music theory, as they will experience first-hand the deep connection between tap dancing and music.

Photography for Nerds (or Nerd Wannabes!)

Click here to register today! This is a science class with a photography problem. The course will focus on basics of photography through the lens of physics, geometry, and a dash of algebra. (For example, think about the ratios and math that go into making an ideal composition!) In each class, students will learn a science-based process or concept that they can use to develop or apply to their photographic style and techniques.

Motion Graphics with Adobe After Effects

Time: Saturday, June 10 from 9am-4pm

Participants will be provided with Mac laptops equipped with the entire Adobe Creative Suite, though Photoshop, Illustrator, and After Effects will be the primary focus.

It will stimulate students to produce new work through generative writing exercises, as well as giving students the opportunity to receive supportive, specific feedback on works-in-progress in a writing workshop. Specific areas of craft instruction will include dialogue, exposition (or back story), and using place or setting to build and develop characters. Students can expect to start one or two new stories, as well as receive constructive feedback on a complete story or novel excerpt.
