The Status Of Feminism Is Lecture Topic By Trenton Artist At MCCC Image

Has feminism become more of a trend than a movement? That will be the topic of discussion by Latina artist Tamara Torres in an upcoming lecture at Mercer County Community College (MCCC).

"La Feminista: Soy Yo? (The Feminist, Am I?)" will be the title of Torres' talk at noon on Wednesday, Feb. 20 in the Communications Building, Room 108. Her presentation is part of MCCC's spring 2019 Distinguished Lecture Series at the West Windsor Campus, 1200 Old Trenton Road. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Torres, a Trenton-based photographer, painter, and performance artist, will explore what feminism is for different cultures and generations of women. She will discuss her upcoming photo and video exhibit- which shares its name with the lecture - and how it attempts to bridge the different experiences and identities within the feminist movement through dialogue and posing the question: "What does feminism mean to you?"

As a youth in her native Trenton, Torres survived abuse, discrimination and homelessness, and in her art she has taken up the cause of abused, disadvantaged, and disenfranchised women around the globe. At age 12, a friend gave her a camera and she has been taking photos and using them to in her art ever since. Torre's photo-based collage art has been shown in New York, Chicago, London, and Rome. As a Puerto Rican, Torres has recently sought to counter misconceptions of Latino citizens and immigrants through her art. She has recently begun creating and exhibiting abstract paintings.

Her photo and video exhibit, also entitled "La Feminista: Soy Yo?" will be on display at MCCC's James Kerney Campus Gallery in Trenton from Feb. 28 to April 4, with an artist talk on Wednesday, March 6 at 6 p.m. For more information, visit www.mccc.edu/jkcgallery.
