Surflight Theatre, under the leadership of Producing Artistic Director Steve Steiner, presents the second mainstage production of their second summer season with Jesus Christ Superstar. A Rock Opera, Jesus Christ Superstar is set against the backdrop of an extraordinary and universally-known series of events but seen, unusually, through the eyes of Judas Iscariot. Loosely based on the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, Superstar follows the last week of Jesus Christ's life. The story, told entirely through song, explores the personal relationships and struggles between Jesus, Judas, Mary Magdalene, his disciples, his followers and the Roman Empire. This iconic 1970's rock score contains such well-known numbers as "Superstar," "I Don't Know How to Love Him" and "Gethsemane." Originally a blockbuster and groundbreaking rock opera album, written by a very young Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, it debuted on the Broadway stage in 1971 and less than a year later opened for a spectacular lengthy London West End run. Superstar went on to movie fame in 1973 starring Ted Neeley. It was most recently seen on the highly acclaimed NBC live broadcast starring John Legend and Sara Bareilles.

James Alexander Bond has directed over 200 productions in the past 25 years and will be the Director for Jesus Christ Superstar. Michael A. Blackmon, Choreographer, has many choreography and performance credits from NYC including Carnegie Hall and is also on the faculty at Wagner College. Musical Direction is by Nicholas Kaminski., Costume Design Stephanie Luckey, Sound Design Ian Wehrle, Lighting Design William Gibbons-Brown. The 2018 Surflight Cast will star Owen Beans as Jesus, Andrew Foote as Judas Iscariot, Bradley Betros as Simon, Adrianne Hick as Annas, Andre' Dion Wills as Pontius Pilate and Dwan Hayes as Mary Magdalene. Artistic Director Steve Steiner will be seen as Caiaphas, a role he recently performed at Bristol Riverside Theatre in Philadelphia, and Nicholas Kaminski will be King Herod.
