RAKU-FEST to Kick Off at the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey

By:

On Saturday and Sunday, October 22-23, the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey in Summit will offer "RAKU-FEST" featuring the ancient art of Raku firing, first developed in Japan centuries ago. Raku firing, which uses special glazes and firing techniques to produce metallic and crazed finishes.

RAKU-FEST is open to the public, and will be taught by expert ceramicist Peter Syak, assisted by Lisetter Bedoya, both of whom are regular instructors at the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey.

Part of the appeal of Raku is that the entire process can be completed so quickly. "It takes just two hours from glazing to amazing," says Libby Clarke, Director of the Studio School at the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey.

All are welcome, including beginners. Pre-made pieces of bisque pottery will be available (small pots, plates and jewelry pieces) which can be glazed and fired, and which will be ready to take home the same day. In addition, the Art Center is offering a "Potters Special," for ceramicists with their own pots who may bring up to 3 pieces of their own small bisqueware, glaze and fire them.

Call 908-273-9121 to reserve your space. For more information visit www.artcenternj.org.
