Project Girl Performance Collective Performs at NJ State Theatre 4/4

State Theatre presents Project Girl Performance Collective, a New York-based nonprofit organization that provides teens with a fearless space to create and perform original work, in a school performance of Voices of Our Generation on Monday, April 4, 2011 at 10:30am.

Voices of Our Generationis an empowering, youth-driven show of original work written and performed by teenagers. In deeply personal material based on real interviews and experiences, Project Girls (ages 12-21) explore topics such as bullying, body image, peer pressure to have sex, peer pressure to not to have sex, gentrification and the daily struggles of surviving as a teenager in this world. Project Girls share their perspectives on love, relationships, current events, the future and creating change. Audiences can expect to walk away with a renewed sense of their own empowerment, regardless of age and gender.Voices of Our Generation presents audiences with solutions and ideas for action that can start upon leaving the theatre.

Artistic Director Ashley Marinaccio, who is born and bred in Red Bank, NJ is "indescribably proud" to have Project Girl Performance Collective on her home turf. "To give our talented young artists a chance to perform for their peers at one of New Jersey's largest theaters is a dream come true."

The show features a diverse ensemble of girls between the ages of 12 and 21, from the tri-state area including two girls from New Jersey: Drue Clark (age 12, from Plainfield, NJ) and Kaitlyn Howard (age 12). Other members of the group include Deanna Alexandra (16, Long Island), Dominique Fishback (20, Brooklyn), Monica Furman (16, Brooklyn) Kristen Gonzalez (21, Brooklyn) Roni Layton (19, Long Island) Stacey Oliver (18, Connecticut), Amber Rhaab (19, Queens), Emily Rupp (21, Manhattan) Blaise Sandberg (16, Long Island) Camille Theobald (21, Manhattan), and Karen Vigo (19, Bronx). Voices of Our Generation is under the direction of Ashley Marinaccio and Jessica Greer Morris.

Project Girl Performance Collective (PGPC) takes workshops and performances into schools, community centers and theaters around the country and abroad. PGPC empowers young women by creating a safe space to address contemporary social, political and cultural issues through the performing arts and written word. Project Collective is produces cutting-edge theatre and performance as a medium for awareness, action and social change.
