Move For Hunger Hosts Fifth Annual Surfside Food Drive Today

By:

Join Move For Hunger this Labor Day Weekend for the Fifth Annual Surfside Food Drive, Cornhole Tournament and Concert Series on the 2nd Ave. Asbury Park Boardwalk. While hunger may not be on people's minds during the summer holidays, for the 120,000 people in Monmouth and Ocean County that struggle to find their next meal, hunger takes no vacations.

Area residents and beachgoers are urged to bring down non-perishable food items from today, August 31 to September 2, 2013 to the Move For Hunger tent on 2nd Ave boardwalk in Asbury Park. The three-day event features 3 days of live music from local artists and cover bands like Under Pressure, Enjoy! and the B-Street band, as well as the 3rd Annual Surfside Cornhole Tournament at Stone Pony.

On Saturday, Aug. 31, Move For Hunger will be joined by members of the North East Remnant, a team of local Star Wars enthusiasts in screen-accurate replica costumes.

Anyone who donates non-perishable food items over the weekend will receive a free Surfside 2013 T-shirt courtesy of event sponsors and will be entered into a raffle to win one of the many prizes and giveaways. The event is open to the public and all are welcome to come down and enjoy the free music.

"The Surfside Food Drive is a great way for summer residents to clear out the kitchens and pantries of seasonal properties while making a difference for the less fortunate on the Jersey Shore," says Adam Lowy, executive director of Move For Hunger. "Last year almost 3,200 lbs. was collected, enough to provide 2,667 meals to families and individuals in Monmouth and Ocean Counties.

Lowy's Moving Service, the local partner of Move For Hunger, has generously donated all the boxes for the food drive as well as transportation to deliver the food collections directly to the food bank.
