Move over, Ellington, Evans and Marsalis! Here comes my jazz discovery of 2007 and Canada's entry into the orchestral jazz continuum. The Canadian composer/pianist Maria Schneider formed her Grammy Award-winning Orchestra in 1993, and most of its members have been with her ever since - because she writes for them.

Schneider is first and foremost a composer, constantly pushing the boundaries of jazz, which is why Don Heckman of the Los Angeles Times called hers "the first truly novel approach to big band jazz composition of the new century." Her 2007 release Sky Blue was on everybody's 'Ten Best' list, and just this spring she picked up her second Grammy for Best Instrumental Composition (Cerulean Skies). Nate Chinen of The New York Times said it best: ‘For its marriage of precision and imagination, and the outright beauty of its broad-canvas compositions, the Maria Schneider Orchestra has no peer in the realm of jazz.'

I agree, and so will you on February 20th.
