Carolyn Carlson, one of America's great artistic expats, makes her first U.S. appearance in five years when she performs her solo "Double Vision" at Montclair State University's Alexander Kasser Theater, October 14-17. A magical use of multimedia to create a fantastical new world of light, color and motion, the 2006 work was choreographed in collaboration with Electronic Shadow (architect Naziha Mestaoui and media artist Yacine Aït Kaci).

Carolyn Carlson's career has taken her all over the world. Born in California, she was a principal in Alwin Nikolais Dance Theatre in New York City from 1965 to 1971 when she moved to France, where she was appointed Etoile-Chorégraphe at the Paris Opera Ballet from 1974 to 1980.

She played a key role in the development of French and Italian contemporary dance through the Paris Opera Ballet's GRCOP (Choreographic Research Group of the Paris Opera) and Teatrodanza at La Fenice (1980-84). She was Resident Artist at the Théâtre de la Ville in Paris, Resident Artist at the Helsinki City Theater and the Finnish National Ballet, and the Artistic Director of the Cullberg Ballet in Stockholm.

Carlson has created more than 100 pieces including such classics: "Density 21.5," "The Year of the Horse," "Blue Lady," "Steppe," "Maa," "Signes," "Writings on Water" and "Inanna." She creates dances that embody philosophical and spiritual ideas and prefers the term "visual poetry" to "choreography" to describe her work. The Carolyn Carlson Company consists of a core group of
19 dancers who come together in various combinations depending on the project.

In 2006, Carlson's work was awarded the first Golden Lion given to a choreographer by the Venice Biennale. Currently, Carlson is director of two organizations: the National Choreographic Centre Roubaix Nord-Pas de Calais, which produces and tours shows all over the world, and the 11-year-old Atelier de Paris-Carolyn Carlson, an international center, which offers master classes, artistic residencies and studio space for the creation of new work. For more information, visit http://www.ccn-roubaix.com/
