Cape May Stage Hosts Free Events for Family Week, 3/6-3/13

In cooperation with the New Jersey Theatre Alliance, Cape May Stage announces several exhilarating events in conjunction with the 14th Annual Family Week at the Theatre and Stages Festival. Family Week, an annual statewide program, begins March 6th and runs through March 13, 2011. During the week, Cape May Stage offers free and discounted events to their patrons, encouraging families to attend professional theatre together, making the experience affordable, educational, and, most importantly, exciting. The offerings this year include events for all ages, being performed throughout Cape May County.

FREE ACTING CLASSES FOR ALL AGES

These two-session workshop is a great chance for budding actors to explore what goes into a performer's craft. Join Cape May Stage's Education Director Don Toal as he guides students through different techniques including movement, vocal and improvisational performance. While the material is tailored for those with basic/general acting experience, students of all levels are welcome. All classes are Monday and Wednesday, 3:30-5:30. The Elementary class for ages 8-10 will run March 7th and 9th, the Pre-Teen class for ages 11-13 will run March 14th and 16th, the Teen class for ages 14-17 will run March 21st and 23rd, and the Adult class will run March 28th and 30th. FREE PERFORMANCE OF NUMBER THE STARS
Sunday, March 6, 3PM

Ten-year-old Annemarie Johansen and her best friend Ellen Rosen often think about life before the war. But it's now 1943 and their life in Copenhagen is filled with school, food shortages, and the Nazi soldiers marching in their town. The Jews of Denmark are being "relocated", so Ellen moves in with the Johansens as part of the family. When Annemarie is asked to go on a dangerous mission, she must somehow find the strength and courage to save her best friend's life. Produced by the Beth Judah Congregation of Ventnor, NJ, this heart-warming family musical is based on the Newberry Medal-winning novel by Lois Lowry. The performance at the Robert Shackleton Playhouse includes a talkback session afterwards. The performance is suitable for all ages, and particularly relevant to elementary to middle school children. FREE LIVE READING OF THE SHADOW: A CLASSIC RADIO PLAY FOR SENIORS

Visitors to senior recreation centers in Cape May County will be treated to a trip back in time, in the form of a live reading of a classic radio play. This year's performance is taken from the adventures of "The Shadow." Lamont Cranston, wealthy young man about town, moonlights as a cloaked vigilante... with the power to cloud men's minds! One of the most iconic radio heroes of the 1930s, the title character was brought to life by the legendary actor Orson Welles, among others, and bears the infamous tagline: "Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?....The Shadow knows!"

Back by popular demand, local performers bring the classic broadcast to life, complete with traditional radio music and period "advertisements.' Through participation with the performers in several improvisational acting exercises, the audience will also get a taste for acting themselves. This is one of Cape May Stage's most popular events! FREE TOURING PRODUCTION OF SHAKESPEARE THEATRE OF NJ'S JULIUS CAESAR

Shakespeare Live and Cape May Stage are teaming up once again, offering a full-scale production from one of New Jersey 's premier Shakespeare Theater Companies. On Sunday March 13th, The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey's touring production of "Shakespeare LIVE!" will be presented at 3 p.m. at the Robert Shackleton Playhouse in downtown Cape May. This touring production offers a fresh, imaginative take on the Bard's classic Julius Caesar.
