William H. Gile Series Welcomes Asphalt Orchestra to Capitol Center for the Arts Tonight

By:

The William H. Gile Series presents ASPHALT ORCHESTRA at the Capitol Center for the Arts tonight, September 10, at 7:30 p.m.

Since its inception in 2009 Asphalt Orchestra has energized audiences from New York's Lincoln Center to London's Barbican Centre, and throughout the US. The 12-member band has redefined the idea of a mobile ensemble and has been described as "Not Your Mother's Marching Band" by The Philadelphia Inquirer and "An iconoclastic 12 piece marching band... part parade spectacle, part halftime show and part cutting-edge contemporary music concert" by The New York Times. This event is free of charge; however tickets need to be reserved to ensure seating.

Asphalt Orchestra is a radical new street band that brings ambitious processional music to the mobile masses. Created by the founders of the "relentlessly inventive" new music presenter Bang on a Can (New York Magazine), Asphalt Orchestra unleashes innovative music from concert halls, rock clubs and jazz basements and takes it to the streets and beyond. The band brings together some of the most exciting rock, jazz and classical players in New York City whoThe New York Times called "12 top-notch brass and percussion players."

For this performance, Asphalt Orchestra will perform, Unpack the Elephant, an indoor experience directed by Mark DeChiazza and Andrew Robinson. Unpack the Elephant brings the inventive and eclectic spirit of this renegade group to the stage with an inventive show featuring music by Frank Zappa, David Byrne and Annie Clark, Yoko Ono, Björk, and new music by members of the ensemble. The show is a wild musical ride driven by the tunes, and Asphalt's celebrated band members physically bring the music to life. Configurations are created and torn apart; order is wrested from chaos; alliances are formed and lost. Along the way, Asphalt Orchestra reveals a new form altogether - a mobile-musical-dramatic ensemble, bringing their unstoppable sound and top-notch talent to the stage.

Tickets for this free Gile Series Performance are available Monday, August 12, by calling 603-225-1111, online at www.ccanh.com, and at the box office, located at 44 South Main Street, Concord, NH 03301, on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
