On Tuesday, October 10, The Music Hall's Innovation and Leadership series will host a screening of CITIZEN JANE: Battle for the City, plus a panel discussion moderated by Portsmouth City Councilor Chris Dwyer including Jane Jacobs' biographer Robert Kanigel, author of EYES ON THE STREET: The Life of Jane Jacobs and local architect Steven McHenry. Presented in affiliation with PS21: Portsmouth Smart Growth for the 21st Century, the event will focus on the life and work of Jane Jacobs, who stars in both the film and book.

CITIZEN JANE, directed by Matt Tyranuer (Valentino: The Last Emperor), brings to life Jane Jacobs' 1960s showdown with ruthless construction kingpin Robert Moses over his plan to raze lower Manhattan to make way for a highway.

EYES ON THE STREET, a portrait of Jane Jacobs based on news sources and interviews, was named among the "Best Books of the Year" by NPR, "Top Ten Art Books of the Year" by Booklist, "Top Ten Architecture Books of the Year" by World Architecture and was longlisted for the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Nonfiction.

Said Chris Dwyer, the evening's moderator, "Jane Jacobs was a community-oriented urbanist and her life demonstrates how any one of us can make a difference in shaping our surroundings. I look forward to hearing from Robert Kanigel about his book and from Steven McHenry who, as a local architect, has played a role in influencing Portsmouth's urban fabric."

Tickets for the event on Tuesday, October 10, at 7pm, are $30 ($28 for members) and include a reserved seat for film viewing and a moderated discussion/Q+A, plus a copy of EYE ON THE STREET: The Life of Jane Jacobs ($18, paperback) and post-event book signing. Packages can be purchased online at TheMusicHall.org, over the phone at 603.436.2400 or in person at the B2W Box Office at the Historic Theater, 28 Chestnut Street.

About the Author: Robert Kanigel is the author of seven previous books. He has been the recipient of numerous awards, including a Guggenheim fellowship and the Grady-Stack Award for science writing. His book The Man Who Knew Infinity was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. For twelve years he was a professor of science writing at M.I.T. He and his wife now live in Baltimore, Maryland, and he writes full time.
