The Capitol Center Jazz Orchestra Honors Duke Ellington Today

By:

As part of the "A Moment in Time" Series, The Capitol Center Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of Clayton J. Poole, will pay tribute to Duke Ellington today, March 10th at 4:00pm. The tribute features the celebrated Metta Quintet. The performance will be held at the Capitol Center for the Arts with tickets starting at $20.

Metta Quintet's latest CD, Big Drum/ Small World, was lauded by All About Jazz for its "unmitigated joie de vivre." The ensemble has released two other CDs, also to critical acclaim: Going to Meet the Man (2002); and Subway Songs (2006). Metta Quintet is a highly creative ensemble comprised of some of today's brightest emerging jazz artists and dedicated to blazing new artistic territory while maintaining a commitment to fostering new audiences and nurturing young talent. Metta Quintet is the official resident ensemble of JazzReach Performing Arts & Education Association, Inc., one of our nation's leading arts education organizations.

Metta Quintet and The Capitol Center Jazz Orchestra will pay homage to the music of Duke Ellington. From the early Cotton Club years to the 1956 Newport Jazz Festival, his sacred concerts, film scores and symphony compositions, the legacy of Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington and his profound impact on American music is unequaled. For over fifty years, "Duke" personified the great American jazz art form and has been hailed as one of America's greatest composers. Works such as "Rockin' In Rhythm", "Black and Tan Fantasy", "Deep South Suite" and "Harlem Air Shaft" reflected the times and mood in which he lived. His popular compositions included "Sophisticated Lady", "It Don't Mean a Thing if it Ain't Got That Swing", "Mood Indigo", "Prelude to a Kiss", and "Caravan", to name just a few. Along with his "alter-ego", composer Billy Strayhorn, Ellington composed over 1000 original works of music, making him one of the most prolific composers of all time.

Ticket prices: $45 Gold Circle, $35 Orchestra/Mezzanine, $20 Balcony.

Tickets are available now by calling 603-225-1111, online at www.ccanh.com, and at the box office, located at 44 South Main Street, Concord, NH 03301, on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
