An Intimate Evening With Rosanne Cash Held At Concord's Capitol Center 5/5

The eldest daughter of the iconic Johnny Cash, Roseanne Cashhas carved out a singer-songwriter career that has been marked by her own musical poetry and remarkable alto. At the age of 54, following a slew of best-selling albums, she has taken a hiatus from her own songs and looked to some of the most revered artists in country music history, artists whose names were given to her by her father when she was 18. Johnny Cash's original list for his then-teenage daughter included 100 essential songs ranging from stony lonesome Appalachian ballads to the wry wit of Woody Guthrie and the country breakthroughs of Hank Williams and Merle Haggard. It was a master handing down the tricks of the trade. Now, decades later, Ms. Cashhas released an album featuring 12 of those songs and named it "The List". By revisiting her father's keen understanding of the evolution of country, Cash found a way to close the circle, to reconnect with the challenging yet inspiring heritage she began to grapple with after her father passed away

Her tour features songs from "The List", including "Long Black Veil" and "Girl from the North Country," as well as the tunes she's made famous, such as "Seven Year Ache" and "The Wheel." The combination is a concert that pays homage to country greats while staying true to Rosanne Cash'ssignature style. Both her interpretations and original songs show off her tremendous, rich alto as well her ability to seamlessly cross country, rock, folk and pop genres.

"Ms. Cash has a voice both dark and sweet, with gentle but reliable vibrato, and she knows how to convey the quiet sting of heartache," writes The New York Times in an October concert review. But it's not all bittersweet heartache. Country-rock hijinks round out any Rosanne Cash appearance.
