Flashdance the Musical is a fun night at the theater. Am I going to remember some inspirational message or an overarching theme, probably not but what I will remember is that I had a great night at the theater. Isn't that ultimately what musical theater is about? Flashdance had upbeat music, emotional moments and great choreography, basically everything that I hoped I would see.

So let's get right to it, the good: Jillian Mueller as Alex Owens was awesome. She maybe has the hardest job on the stage right now. From her quick changes and unbelievable dancing to her singing, and not just casual singing, she is either belting or singing in her head voice. Dequina Moore and Alison Ewing as Kiki and Tess were showstopping. They brought light and energy to any scene or musical number they were in. The male ensemble was also very good and all of its members sang great. Jo Ann Cunningham as Hannah was pretty great as well.

And the not so good: The book could use some work. It is hard to make a movie script into a musical book, I get that but still, it could have been better. Corey Mach as Nick Hurley was pretty good but I wanted him to have a better singing voice. The chemistry between Mach and Mueller was hot though. Ginna Claire Mason as Gloria could also have had a better singing voice.

Overall, this was a good show and production. So get to the Aronoff while you can because this is a fun musical that you should see.

Flashdance the Musical is running through Broadway Across America at the Aronoff until November 10.
